It’s time for our July Hat Patterns! This month I’m sharing a pretty slouch hat pattern that matches last week’s Agnes Infinity Cowl. The Agnes Slouch Hat is crocheted with Medium Weight Yarn . You use a 4 mm (G) hook for the band and a 5.5 mm (I) hook for the rest of the hat.
You can make this slouch hat with one color of yarn, or like me, by alternating a solid color with a different kind of medium weight yarn.
If you share your finished Agnes Infinity Cowl photo online, be sure to tag it with #AgnesHat so I can see it too! Thanks! Rhondda
I really love this stitch – how easy it is to crochet – how great it looks when you alternate 2 different colors of yarn. It think this stitch is going to become one of your favorites too!

Agnes Slouch Hat Pattern Instructions
This hat is crocheted from the bottom up. First we begin with the hat band, then we work around the edge of the band to make the main hat body. The top of the hat is shaped slightly to follow the curve of the head to make the hat less bulky.
Photo support is provided after the written instructions. Images can be made larger by clicking on them!
Using your 4 mm (G) hook (or size required for gauge) and leaving a 6 inch yarn tail:
R1: With Color A: ch 11, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [10 sc]
R2: 1 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the bl of each of the next 8 sts, 1 sc in the last st, ch 1, turn. [10 sc]
R3-R75: Rep R2, do not finish off.
Next we will work across the row edges of the band.
Changing to the 5.5 mm (I) hook and using Color A:
R1: Work 74 sc evenly across the row edges of the band. Sl st to the first st to join. [74 sc]
From this point on, we will work in joined rounds.
R2: Continue working with Color A. Ch 2, sk 1 sc, 1 dc in the next sc. *Starting in the same st as the last leg of the last st worked, sp-dc2tog, ch 1**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first dc of the round, changing to Color B, on the yarn over of the slip stitch. [37 sp-dc2tog, 37 ch1sp]
R3: Ch 1, beg in the ch1sp falling immediately bef the sl st to join, work 1 sp-dc2tog. **Starting in the same ch1sp as the last leg of the last st worked, sp-dc2tog, ch 1**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first dc of the round, changing to Color A, on the yarn over of the slip stitch. [37 sp-dc2tog, 37 ch1sp]
R4: Ch 1, beg in the ch1sp falling immediately bef the sl st to join, work 1 sp-dc2tog. **Starting in the same ch1sp as the last leg of the last st worked, sp-dc2tog, ch 1**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first dc of the round, changing to Color B, on the yarn over of the slip stitch. [37 sp-dc2tog, 37 ch1sp]
R4-R14: Rep R3 and R4
R15: Ch 1, beg in the ch1sp falling immediately bef the sl st to join, work 1 dc2tog over it and the next ch1sp. **Dc2tog over the next 2 ch1sp, ch 1**. Rep from * to ** around, working the final leg of the final dc2tog in the same ch1sp as the first leg of the first dc2tog. Sl st to the first dc2tog of the round, changing to Color A, on the yarn over of the slip stitch. [19 dc2tog, 19 ch1sp]
R16: Ch 1, beg in the ch1sp falling immediately bef the sl st to join, work 1 sp-dc2tog. **Starting in the same ch1sp as the last leg of the last st worked, sp-dc2tog, ch 1**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first dc of the round. Finish off the yarn leaving approximately 8-10 inches of yarn for closing the hat. [10 sp-dc2tog, 10 ch1sp]
Weave the yarn end throughout the stitches in the final round, cinching it closed tightly before weaving in any remaining ends. For help with closing the hat please see my Closing Technique for Hats and Mittens Tutorial.
Using the yarn end you left at the beginning of the project, seam the hat band closed using a whipstitch technique. Weave in your ends.
Photo Support for Main Hat
The following photos are from the matching Cowl pattern but the slouch hat is made the very same way! The only difference is you would have the hat band beneath R1.
