Learn to Crochet: Slip Knot and Starting Chain

The starting chain can also be called the beginning chain and the foundation row of your crochet project.

It is very important for the chains (stitches) in the starting chain row to be the same size as the stitches you are going to make in the rest of your project.

If the chain stitches are tighter (smaller) than the crochet stitches you will use in your project, this will cause the beginning edge of your project to be shorter than the rows that follow. The entire shape of your project depends on the starting chain being of similar size to the rest of your rows.

Be sure to work your starting chain loosely – using a relaxed tension.

I hope you find this first video and the tips and tricks I have included, helpful.
