November 11th is fast approaching and once again we have misplaced our poppies. I really need to invest in these pin backs.
With everything going on in the world, I decided to make some new crochet poppies to wear this year – instead of hitting a store to find them at the check out.
This doesn’t mean that I still can’t support our Canadian Legion though! You can donate online now. In case you didn’t know – here’s the link
This Crochet Poppy Pattern is Beginner Friendly and there is a quick video (coming soon) to help you too!

- I prefer to start my poppies with a double magic ring but I have demonstrated (video coming soon) how to make these using a chain 3 and sl st to form a ring to start so beginners can also make this project.
The Easiest 5 Minute Poppy Pattern Instructions
This poppy is crocheted in a single round. There are 2 ways you can start this project – either with a double magic ring OR a chain 3 and slip stitch to form a ring.
Using your 5 mm [H] hook (or size required for gauge) and leaving an 8-10 inch yarn tail:
R1: With Red: Ch 3 and sl st to the third ch from the hook to form a ring. *(Ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 1 sl st) into the ring.** Rep from * to ** 4 times. [4 petals – 12 dc, 8 ch2sp, 4 sl st]
Finish off and weave in both of the red yarn ends.
Black Yarn Center
If you would like to use a yarn center, please follow these instructions:
R1: With Black: Ch 2 and work 4 sc in the second ch from the hook. Sl st to the first st to join.
Finish off and weave in one of the black yarn ends. Use the second black yarn end to attach the center to the poppy. Finish off and weave your end in securely.
Options for the Center:
You can also use a black button, or a round piece of felt for your center. If you choose to use the button, use sewing thread and sew the button securely in place. If you choose to cut a small piece of felt for the center, you can use fabric glue to stick that in place, or hand-sew the piece of felt in place.
You may add a simple safety pin back to your poppy. Simply sew the bar of the safety pin that doesn’t open and close to the poppy on the WS of the project. You can make this look neater by attaching a small piece of fabric or felt over top of the pin and then glue it in place.
I have small brooch backs that I have purchased for these types of projects. You can hand sew the brooch back to the back of the poppy. Try to use black thread because if you use yarn it can sometimes make it too bulky for the clasp to open and close securely. If you are selling these at craft fairs, I recommend cutting a small piece of fabric or felt and then gluing this patch on top of the pin back to give it a more finished look.
