The Easy-On Mittens Crochet Pattern is now available in four sizes: Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, and Adult Large. This updated version gives you a full family set in bulky yarn, with clear instructions and an easy-to-use wrist opening.

Last Updated: November 2025
The original small-child and toddler versions (Darla’s Easy-On Mitts and Drew’s Easy-On Mitts) remain available as separate free patterns, and both are linked in this post for quick access.
These mittens are designed with a wrist-opening feature that makes them simple to slide onto the hand before fastening. This helps keep fingers from catching on the cuff and makes the mittens easier to put on for children, older adults, and anyone who needs a gentler fit. You can wear the closure on top or underneath the wrist, or seam the cuff closed for a regular mitten.
I hope this pattern helps you crochet warm and comfortable mittens for your family and for others who may need them

Special Stitches and Techniques
Third Loop of a Single Crochet
The third loop of the single crochet stitch is referring to the stitch located behind (and slightly to the left-side) of the back loop. If you twist your stitches slightly you will see it hiding back there. All stitches with a yarn over in them include this third loop (back bar). Please see this tutorial if you need help: How to Find the Third Loop

Notes
- We do not count chain stitches or slip stitches as stitches and we do not work into them.
- For the initial chain row of the cuff we work into the back bump of the chain only (this gives it a bit more elasticity). If you need help please see this tutorial: Alternate Ways to Work into the Starting Chain

These mittens are crocheted from the cuff to the fingertips in one piece. The wrist opening is designed to help the wearer slide their hand into the mitten more easily. The thumb is added after the main mitten is complete.

Mitten Cuff
The mitten cuff is crocheted in rows. If you plan on seaming the cuff for a regular pair of mittens, leave a 8-inch yarn tail before beginning R1. You can use this yarn tail to whipstitch the seam closed when you are finished making the mitten.
Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required to reach gauge:
R1: Ch 9, beg in the 2nd ch from the hook and working in the back bump of each ch, work 1 sc in each ch across, ch 1, turn. [8 sc]
R2: 1 sc in both loops of the first st, 1 sc in bl of each of the next 6 sts, 1 sc in both loops of the last st, ch 1, turn. [8 sc]
R3-R22: Rep Row 2. [8 sc]
Do not finish off. Proceed to the Main Mitten section below.
Main Mitten
The main mitten is crocheted directly into the edges of the mitten cuff in rounds.
- Fold the cuff in half to make the stitches of the first row and the stitches of the last row touch.
- Slip stitch into the row end of the first row to join the cuff together.
- You will now continue to work your mitten in continuous rounds. I recommend you add a stitch marker after you make the first stitch of Rnd 1 below to mark your place.

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required to reach gauge:
Rnd 1: 1 sc in each row end, around the top of the cuff. [22 sc]
Rnd 2: 1 sc in bl of each of the next 17 sts; 1 sc in third loop of each of the next 5 sts. [22 sc]
Rnd 3: 1 sc in third loop of each of the next 17 sts, 1 sc in both loops (normal crochet) of each of the next 5 sts. [22 sc]
Rnd 4: *1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st**. Work from * to ** five times. 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts. [27 hdc]
Rnd 5-Rnd 7: 1 hdc in each st around. [27 hdc]
Note: Round 8 is different for each hand. Follow the Left-Hand instructions to make a left mitten or the Right-Hand instructions to make a right mitten. After Round 8, continue with Round 9 and the remaining rounds, which are the same for both hands.
- The sl st for Rnd 8 counts as a stitch and you will work into it as a stitch in Rnd 9.
- The stitches you SKIP in Rnd 8 will become the thumbhole.
Left Hand
Rnd 8: 1 hdc in each of the next 6 sts, sk the next 7 sts, 1 sl st and 1 hdc in the next st (the fourteenth st), 1 hdc in each of the next 13 sts. [20 hdc and 1 sl st]
Right Hand
Rnd 8: 1 hdc in each of the next 20 sts, sk the next 7 sts, 1 sl st in the first stitch of the next row to join. [20 hdc and 1 sl st]

Rnd 13: 1 hdc in the first st, hdc2tog around. [11 hdc]
Rnd 14: Sc2tog around until 1 stitch remains. 1 sc in the last st. [6 sc]
Finish off leaving an 8-inch tail of yarn.
How to Close the Top of the Mitten
- Thread the yarn tail on a needle and weave it back and forth through the remaining front loops of the stitches in Rnd 14.
- Pull to tighten and close the top of the mitten.
- Weave the yarn end securely inside the mitten.
- For help please see this tutorial: Simple Closing Method for Mittens and Hats

Adding the Thumb
These instructions are the same for both mittens.
Position the thumb opening on the left side. Join new yarn with a slip stitch into the stitch directly to the left of the palm of the mitten.
Please note, the stitch you are joining to already contains 1 stitch from the main mitten.

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required to reach gauge:

R2: You will count and work into the initial ch 1 for this row. Ch 1, 1 sc in the first hdc of R1, 1 sc in the next hdc in R1, ch 1, turn. [2 sc, 1 ch1sp]
R3: 1 sc in each of the 2 sc, the ch 1 and the last hdc from R1, ch1, turn. [4 sc]
R4-R6: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [4 sc]
Rnd 7: 1 sc in each row end and in each st around the entire closure. Sl st to the initial sc of Rnd 6 to join. Do not finish off. [24 sc]
How to Attach the Closures
- Line the closure up with the bottom of the cuff and secure it along 3 sides by sewing it with your yarn and needle.
- Attach the button so it will line up with the hole left in the wrist closure.
- Secure the button.

Hi 🙂 When you skip those stitches it will be the opening left for the thumb (we add them thumb later). If you watch this bit here in my video for a different pair of my mitts you can see how to fold the fabric from those skipped stitches to allow you to continue crocheting around the mitten without leaving a large amount of extra yarn. Basically you will be working into the next stitch as though it is immediately beside the last stitch you worked. Maintaining your gauge. This will create a section to put your thumb into when you wear the mitt. I have forwarded through the video to the point where it shows you how to work into that next stitch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns037MeyZho&feature=youtu.be The video is for a different mitten though so be sure only to watch it for the skipped stitches part! All the best, Rhondda
I am having a problem with “mitten R hand, row 8.” I must be reading the pattern incorrectly. On row 8 when I skip 7 sts, am I supposed to slip stitch those 7 sts? When I skip the 7 sts there is a length of yarn over the 7 sts. I’m confused as to what I did wrong.
Can you help me?
Thank you so much Judie 🙂
What a great mitten pattern . The easiest and best I’ve found .
Thanks for making it so easy to follow .. and hdc rather than single .
I ❤️ This pattern
thanks for providing a link to the yarn. I never know when I may need to make a substitution and that makes it so much easier. thanks again for the pattern too!
