A few years ago, I designed the Dainty Princess Baby Hat for my niece, and since then I’ve received many requests for additional sizes. One of the most common requests has been to adapt it as an adult-sized chemo cap. I’m happy to share the Sweet Hugs Hat, which is based on the original design. This version uses the same stitch pattern from start to finish, creating a completely seamless hat. I’ve also included an alternate edging option, which can be used on any size — you’ll see it featured in the preemie sample I crocheted.

Soft, gentle, and made for comfort — the Sweet Hugs Hat fits Preemie to Adult Large, uses lightweight certified yarn, and is worked seamlessly from the top down.

 Supplies

I chose this yarn specifically for the design because it is the softest and the best yarn for hospital donations, babies and for chemo caps. You can read more about the yarn HERE.  It is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I certified! I love working with it and I recommend it to everyone who is looking for a yarn to use for preemies, newborns or chemo caps. This yarn is available in 2 different weights; this pattern requires the Lightweight yarn [3].

Since the pattern was released, the yarn has become discontinued. Here are some yarn substitutions that will work with the pattern: Yarn Bee Soft Secret, Katia Baby Jacquard, Katia Baby Ultrasoft, Yarnart Adore, Patons Canadiana, Lion Brand Jeans, Lion Brand Two of Wands Color Theory, Lion Brand Pound of Love, and Hobbii Horizon.

Notes

  • Repeat the entire sequence of instructions in (brackets) the number of times indicated. For example:
  • THIS: *Sk the next hdc; (1 dc and 1 hdc) 2 times in the next dc space. (Sk the next hdc; 1 dc and 1 hdc in the next dc space) 1 times** Rep from * to ** 5 times.
  • MEANS: *Skip the next hdc. Work (1 dc and 1 hdc, 1 dc and 1 hdc) in the next dc space. (Skip the next hdc. Work 1 dc and 1 hdc in the next dc space.)** *Skip the next hdc. Work (1 dc and 1 hdc, 1 dc and 1 hdc) in the next dc space. (Skip the next hdc. Work 1 dc and 1 hdc in the next dc space.)** *Skip the next hdc. Work (1 dc and 1 hdc, 1 dc and 1 hdc) in the next dc space. (Skip the next hdc. Work 1 dc and 1 hdc in the next dc space.)**
  • Ch 3 counts as 1 dc but you do not work into it
  • Sl st does not count as a stitch and you do not work into it
  • You will be working into the dc spaces (the space before the POST of the dc st) and skipping all the hdc sts (except when you join at the end of the round).
  • The increase rounds of the hat will be slightly wavy but don’t fret it works itself out as you go 🙂
  • Keep your gauge consistent or the hat will not fit!

EDGING OPTIONS

Pick either edging to work on your finished hat! Edging 1 is like the one Darla is wearing in the photo (the original edging from the Dainty Princess Hat); the other edging is shown on the Preemie Sized Hat. If you choose Edging 2 (Preemie sized hat) you MUST crochet those single crochet stitches in a very relaxed tension. Your gauge must match the same gauge (3 stitches per inch) as the rest of the hat!! If you can’t make them 3 sc per inch, use Edging 1.

EDGING 1

R1: Sl st into the dc space, (2 hdc and 1 sl st) into the same space. *Ch 1, (1 sl st, 2 hdc and 1 sl st) in the next dc space.** Rep from * to ** around. Finish off with an invisible join and weave in ends.

EDGING 2

R1: Sl st into the dc space, 1 sc in the bl of each st around.

R2: Do not join with a sl st. 1 sc in the bl of each st around. Finish off with an invisible join and weave in end.

  1. To join, I skip the ch 3 and sl st into the top of the hdc, and then sl st into the next dc space? So, I’m skipping the entire first dc hdc

  2. Hi! I love this pattern! How would I go about changing it if I wanted to use a DK weight yarn?

  3. No worries Eileen! Thank you for letting me know – I totally meant to add the images and I forgot. I was too excited to release the pattern 😉 Have a lovely week! Rhondda

  4. Thank you so much. I didn’t want to make extra work for you–I thought I was just missing something! Love your site. Thanks again.

  5. Hi Eileen, The images have been added and I am working on a video tutorial for this week for the Preemie hat too. Hope this helps! Rhondda

  6. Hi Eileen! My apologies – I am in the process of making a photo for this but what I meant was the space between the hdc and the next double crochet. So instead of working straight into the next dc as we normally do work into the space beneath the top bits of the stitch (so the stitch is working around both the front and back loop of the dc and the back bar (from the yarn over) of the double crochet. Hope this helps until I can get my photo uploaded!! All the best, Rhondda

  7. I’m afraid I don’t understand this pattern. How do I start it, what is “MR”? I do know how to crochet but the beginning of this pattern has me stumped! Sorry to sound like such a newbie, hope you can help. Thank you.

  8. Hi, Rhondda–I started to make a Sweet Hugs hat (so cute) for the Little Hats, Big Hearts drive. But I don’t know what it means to slip stitch “into the dc space.” The pattern refers to a photo, but I can’t find a photo of where that space is. I’ve tried to find it on other parts of your site, but no luck. I’m sure it will seem obvious once you tell me where to look, but for now I’m stumped. Help? Thanks!
