The Carol Cowl is an easy-to-crochet winter cowl crochet pattern. This project is crocheted back-and-forth in rows with Super Bulky Weight Yarn [6] and a 8 mm (L) hook. You can make this cowl in less than an hour.

The Carol Cowl is a fitted cowl that is designed to sit comfortably under your coat. You can wear it in a number of ways, including as a circular cowl that you can wear above your jacket.

A full video tutorial is available to walk you through making the project. I have also provided 4 additional sizes for those who would like a longer or shorter cowl, or a scarf without buttons.

Notes:

  • Multiple of 2+1 for the turning ch (if you are chaining and then working 1 row of single crochet instead of working the Fsc)
  • Multiple of 2 if you are following the pattern as written using Fsc.
  • To begin with a foundation chain instead of the Fsc, chain 61 and beg in the 2nd ch from the hook and work 1 sc in each st across in the back bar of the ch. This will give you 60 sc. Then proceed to R2.

How to Increase your Cowl Length

To increase your cowl length to 30 inches, work 64 Fsc (or chain 65). To increase your cowl length to 32 inches, work 68 Fsc (or chain 69).

To decrease your cowl length to 26 inches, work 56 Fsc (or chain 57). To decrease your cowl length to 24 inches, work 52 Fsc (or chain 53).

Carol Cowl Crochet Pattern by Rhondda Mol

The cowl is crocheted lengthwise, back-and-forth in rows.

Using your 8 mm (L) hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: 60 Fsc, ch 1, turn. [60]

R2-R12: *Sk 1 st, 1 sc and 1 hdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** across, ch 1, turn. [30 sc and 30 hdc]

Do not finish off after R12, instead proceed to the Finishing Instructions.

Edging:

Rotate your project to work along row ends.

Edge 1: Work 1 sc and 1 hdc in every other row end. Ch 1.  (6 sc and 6 hdc).

Rotate your project to work along the bottom of the foundation chain.

Edge 2:  Work 1 sc and 1 hdc in the base of every st where you already worked 1 sc and 1 hdc in R2. Work 1 sc and 1 hdc in the corner edge. Ch 1.  (31 sc and 31 hdc).

Rotate your project to work along the row ends.

Edge 3: Work 1 sc and 1 hdc in every other row end. Rotate your work. Sl st to the first sc and finish off.   (6 sc and 6 hdc).

Finishing Instructions:

Weave in all your ends.

Place your project on a flat surface with the right side facing you (the edging round should be facing you). We will be attaching buttons to the one edge of the scarf, one in each of the 2 corners and the other 2 buttons are 6 inches further away from the side-edge of the scarf.

Weave in any remaining ends.
