When I think about being comforted – I always think of my Nana. She really knew how to make me feel safe and cherished and loved. I decided to crochet a traditional granny stitch pattern and make it into my very own comfort shawl. Soft and warm and with a little bit of weight to it, the yarn I chose is perfect for this Comfort Shawl.
Boho Great Granny Comfort Shawl Pattern
I had one ball left from the yarn Red Heart sent me to review last month and I went to Michaels and purchased 2 additional balls to complete the project. This shawl can be crocheted in just a few hours – at a relaxed pace it will probably take you 3 hours from start to finish. To cut and add the fringe it took an additional 30 – 45 minutes. I added a few wood beads to the three corner edges as a final touch.
This shawl is a beginner level project. You can work with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn (medium weight) yarn held together – or any Bulky weight yarn.
- Yarn: Red Heart Soft Essentials Bulky (5 oz / 141 g; 131 yds / 120 m) (Sample: 3 balls were used)
- Hook: L – 7 mm Lemon Furls Candy Shop Hook
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker (optional)
68 inches wide at the top
25 inches height from mid center to bottom center
The fringe adds an additional 19 inches in width and an additional 9.5 inches in length. 87 inches wide and 34.5 inches tall.
9 rows = 6 inches (1.5 rows per inch)
15 sts = 8 inches ( 1.875 sts per inch) (this counts from 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc)
US Terminology used
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
MR – magic ring
R – row/round
rem – remaining
rep – repeat
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
st/sts – stitch/stitches
* – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain of multiple instructions.
() – Repeat the instructions between the parentheses the number of times indicated.
 – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
- This project is worked in rows from the bottom of the shawl, up to the top. This allows you to make your shawl as large (or as small) as you want it to be.
- The ch 3 at the beginning of every row is counted as 1 dc and is worked into. Since the ch 3 is counting as 1 dc it is being included at the beginning of each row (instead of the end of the previous row) to make counting easier for you.
- The ch 1 is not included in the end of row totals.

R1: In a MR, ch 3 (ch 3 counts as 1 dc from here to the end of the pattern) and work 2 dc. Pull to close the ring tightly. Turn.
R2: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the first dc of the row, ch 1 and sk the next dc; work 3 dc in the top of the ch 3. Turn.
R3: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the first dc of the row, ch 1 and sk 2 dc. Work 3 dc in the next ch1sp; ch 1 and sk 2 dc. Work 3 dc in the top of the ch 3. Turn.
R4: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the first dc of the row, ch 1. Skip all rem dc sts until you reach the final dc of the row (the ch 3). Work (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch1sp across; work 3 dc in the final dc of the row. Turn.
R5 – R38: Rep R4. Finish off and weave in all ends.
At the end of R38 you will have 38 sets of 3 dc for a total of 114 dc. You do not need to stop at this point – you can make your shawl bigger easily, by repeating R4 until you reach the length you want!
Adding the Fringe
For the fringe I cut all my remaining yarn into 20 inch lengths and attached them along the side edges of the shawl using my hook like this:
Step 1: Get your 20 inch length of yarn and your hook ready.
Step 2: Insert your hook through the opening along the edge of the shawl and hook the center of the length of yarn.
Step 3: Pull the loop through the shawl.
Step 4: Now loop the two ends of the length of yarn over the hook.
Step 5: Now pull those two ends through completely.
Step 6: Pull to tighten.
Step 7: Complete.
I also added some wood beads to fringe located at each of the 3 corners. I simply threaded the wood bead on the fringe with my yarn needle and then put the needle back through the bead a second time (in the same direction as the first time I thread it through) to secure it in place.
