Darla’s Easy On Mittens Pattern

These mittens are a fun, fast project that make wonderful gifts for the whole family. The adult mittens include a video tutorial that demonstrates how to complete the mitten from start to finish.

Supplies

• Yarn: Bernat Softee Chunky [5] bulky  (164 m/180 y)(100 g/3.5 oz) < 1 ball (the colour used above is New Denim Heather)
• Crochet Hook: 5mm crochet (US 8/H) hook
• 2 buttons (the ones in the photo are size 18 mm – Gutermann 95 2542)
• Stitch markers
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

Gauge

• Cuff: 4 sc/4 rows of blo sc = 1 inch (2.5 inches length/2.75 inches wide)
• Mitten: 4 hdc/3 rows of hdc = 1 inch (4.5 inches length/4 inches wide *widest part*)

Notes

• If you would like a pair of regular mittens you can omit the Easy-On Mitten Closure and seam the two edges of the cuff together with a whipstitch seam.

Darla’s Easy On Mittens Pattern

This pattern is crocheted starting at the cuff. The cuff is worked in turned rows.

Mitten Cuff Pattern

Row 1: Chain 9

Row 2: this row is worked in the 3^rd loop only (backside of the chain), sc in the 2^nd chain from the hook and each st across, chain 1, turn [8]

Row 3: sc blo across, chain 1, turn [8]

Row 4-22: repeat Row 3  [8]

• Fold the cuff in half, so the beginning stitch is now located on the top right-hand corner.
• Slip stitch to the first chain of row 1 (see Figure 2)
• we do not seam the cuff for this pattern

Continuing around the top of the cuff and working in rounds:

Round 1: sc around the top of the cuff (beginning in the stitch to the left of the ss) [22] (see Figure 1)

Round 2: 1 sc in blo, of each of the first 17 sts, 1 sc in 3^rdloop only of each of the last 5 sts [22]

Round 3: 1 sc in 3^rd loop only of the first 17 sts, 1 sc in both loops (normal crochet) of each of the last 5 sts [22]

Round 4: (1 hdc in each of the first 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st) 5x, 1 hdc in the next 2 sts [27]

Round 5-7: hdc around [27]

Please follow the instructions for the mitten you are currently crocheting (either left or right) for Round 8.

Left Hand Mitten Instructions: Round 8: 1 hdc in each of the first 6 sts, skip the next 7 sts, 1 ss and 1 hdc in the next st (14^th st), 1 hdc in each of the next 13 sts [20]

Right Hand Mitten Instructions: Round 8: 1 hdc in each of the first 20 sts, skip the last 7 sts, 1 ss in the 1^ststitch of the next row to join [20]

Both left and right hand mittens continue at Round 9 below.

Round 9-14: hdc around [20]

Round 15: (hdc2tog) 10 x [10]   *I stitch this round tightly*

Round 16: hdc around [10]

Round 17: sc around [10]

Round 18: ss to the first st, leaving a long tail for sewing; cut the yarn;  turn the mitten inside-out and weave the ends of the yarn through both loops of the sc round;  tighten firmly and weave in loose ends

Thumb Pattern

With the thumb opening on the left-hand side of your work, join the yarn with a slip stitch, to the stitch just to the left of the palm of the mitten (Figure 3).

Round 1: 1 hdc in the same st you ss to, hdc around [8 hdc]

Round 2: ss to the 1^st hdc of round 1, 1 hdc in each st around (except the one you ss into) [7 hdc]

Round 3: ss to the 1^st hdc of round 2, 1 hdc in each st around (except the one you ss into) [6 hdc]

Round 4: sc around [6 sc] , leaving a tail for sewing; cut the yarn; turn the mitten inside-out and weave the ends of the yarn through both loops of the sc round; tighten firmly and weave in loose ends

Easy-On Mitten Closure:

• Create an adjustable loop (AL), or magic ring (or DMR – double magic ring)

Round 1: 12 hdc into the AL (find your button and make sure that it fits into the centre-hole created by the 12 hdc in the AL – you can tighten your loop but ensure you do not tighten it so much that your button no longer fits through)

Row 2: chain 1, sc once into the 1^st hdc of Round 1, chain 1, turn [3]

Row 3-5: 1 sc in each of the 3 stitches you created in row 2, chain 1, turn [3]

Row 6: sc around the entire closure [22], ss to the beginning sc of the row (do not finish off)

Attachment of Closures:

• Please see the diagram and photo below for assistance.
• Place the closure above the ‘valley’ row on the furthest edge of the cuff.  Join the closure with a slip stitch before single crocheting through the closure and around the post stitch of the ‘valley’ row.  Crochet (sc) along the entire edge of the closure and then slip stitch into the cuff before cutting and weaving in the ends of the yarn.
• Next, attach your button.  I also attach this in the valley area of the cuff.

Easy-On Mittens Third Loop Tutorial

The Third Loop.

Some of my patterns will ask you to work in the “third” loop.  This is referring to the stitch located behind (and slightly to the left-side) of the back loop.  If you twist your stitches slightly you will see it hiding back there.  I find it easiest to grab this loop by inserting my crochet hook through the back loop (from the back) and then bringing it back out slowly on the left-hand side to ‘hook’ the third loop with the ‘hook’ part of the crochet hook.
