Slouch Hat Free Pattern @OombawkaDesign

Size: Preemie

To fit 12″ head circumference. 5″ in height before seaming

Note: I am not sure if a slouch hat is practical for a Preemie – so my recommendation is to make this hat one less row in height for the Main Hat Pattern to reach a regular beanie hat size, or to follow the pattern and fold the ribbed band up. The instructions in the pattern are written for the slouch hat. To make this a regular size beanie finish the Main Hat Pattern after Round 5.

Ribbed Band
The band is worked in rows.

Leave an 8″ tail at the beginning – you will use this later to whip-stitch the band together.

The finished length of the ribbed band is 9″ unstretched and the band is approximately 2.25″ wide.

Chain 9

R1: Beginning in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 blsc in each st across, ch 1, turn (8)
R2: 1 blsc in each st across, ch 1, turn, (8)
R3-R28: repeat R2 (8)

Do not finish off – continue to the Main Hat Pattern below.

Main Hat Pattern:

This section is worked in rounds. Slip stitches do not count as stitches in the totals at the end of the rounds. Do not work into the slip stitches – you may wish to use a stitch marker to remember which stitch is a slip stitch.

R1: Ch 1 and turn to work along the row ends of the ribbed band; work 1 sc in each row end for a total of 28 sts, sl st to the 1st st to join (28)

Using the 8″ tail of yarn (from the beginning of the ribbed band section), neatly whip-stitch your ribbed band together. Need help with the whip-stitch? View this tutorial for assistance: How to Join with a Whip Stitch Seam

R2: 1 sc in each st around, sl st to the 1st st to join (28)

Note: the initial ch 3, 1 dc at the beginning of each Round below counts as a double crochet stitch set in the totals at the end of the rounds).

R3: (ch 3, 1 dc) in the 1st st, skip 1 st, [work 2 dc (we will call this a dc st set) in the next st, sk the next st] around; sl st to join in the space between the initial ch 3 and the 1st dc of the round (14 dc stitch sets)

R4: (ch 3, 1 dc) in the same sp as you sl st joined, (work 2 dc in the sp between the 2 sts that make up the next dc st set) around; sl st to join in the sp between the initial ch 3 and the 1st dc of the round (14 dc stitch sets)

Note: if you are making a regular size beanie for a preemie please finish the hat after R5.

R5-R6: repeat R4 (14 dc stitch sets), cut the yarn leaving a 10 inch tail.

Proceed to the Finishing section at the bottom of this post.

Size: Newborn

To fit 13.5″ head circumference. 5.5″ in height before seaming (approximately 4.5″ in height after seaming)

Note: I am not sure if a slouch hat is practical for a Newborn – so my recommendation is to make this hat one less row in height for the Main Hat Pattern to reach a regular beanie hat size. The instructions in the pattern are written for the slouch hat. To make this a regular size beanie finish the Main Hat Pattern after Round 6.

Finishing
Turn your hat inside out and flatten it on a hard surface so the last stitch is in the centre.

Slouch Hat closing TUT @oombawkadesign

Step 1: Thread the yarn end on a yarn needle and whip stitch the center stitch on both sides of the hat together.

Step 2: Now take the hat and flatten it so the side edges are now lined up down the centre, on top of the stitch you just made. Sew through the middle stitch on both the top and bottom pieces of fabric.

Step 3: Now you should have 4 open ‘petals’ around a centre. Whip stitch the center stitch in each of the petals to the center. (Please note: some individuals find this is enough ‘closure’ for them for a slouch hat so if you like this look stop here!)

Step 4: This will create 8 ‘petals’ and your hat is now sufficiently shaped and closed.

  1. Hi Tina, If you use the PrintFriendly button it will let you print, save a PDF or email yourself a copy. You can also use CTRL “P” or CMD “P” to print but it will give you all the icky sidebar stuff too. I also have copy/paste enabled so you can copy and paste it into a word document or notepad – I hope one of these options works for you 🙂 All the best, Rhondda

  2. Hi Rhondda,

I want to make your Slouchy hat but it will not allow me to print the pattern. Could you please advise? Thank you so much.

  3. Hi Leslie, It would depend on the size hat you were making. For the adult sizes you will need almost 2 balls. For the Toddler and smaller sizes 1 ball should be sufficient. Hope this helps, Rhondda

  4. I missed how much yarn is required to make this hat or how many hats one could make from one skein…is that info noted for any of the sizes?

  5. Thank you Geri 🙂 and no worries about the spelling – it really is a different way to spell it unless you are from Wales, UK. My Nana was born in Glamorgan and there is a Valley there called the Rhondda Valley – which I was named after 😉 I’m very happy you like the pattern and found it easy to follow. Thank you also for letting me know about the larger size – the largest I tested myself was Adult Medium (which I wear)! I’m glad you made it work 🙂 All the best, Rhondda

  6. Rhondda–I finished the 2nd Joyful Hat (Adult Large) and decided the “wings” were too holey so added I another center join in each wing to make those holes smaller and less drafty for the head of the wearer. Looks terrific, just like the 1st Joyful Hat I made two days ago in the Child’s 3-5yo.

  7. Rhondda I spelled your name wrong on your Facebook page (which you’re probably used to)…my wrong ~”
I’m working on my 2nd Joyful and Bright Slouch Hat…super easy and trendy. Love the finishing touch–very unique. Thank you!

  8. Hi, I love your patterns and have made a few with great joy. I am having a little trouble understanding the pattern. In particular could you explain a bit more “sl st to join in the space of the initial chain 3”. I know this is very important to the pattern so your help is much appreciated
    Thanks
