Crochet Tip of the Week – Turning Chains
As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. When you purchase through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.
I created this coloured pinnable image for you – showing the crochet symbol, US Crochet Term, US Crochet Abbreviation and the recommended number of turning chains for some common crochet stitches.
I hope you find this helpful –
Recommended Turning Chains
Slip Stitch (sl st) = 0
Single Crochet (sc) = 1
Half Double Crochet (hdc) = 2
Double Crochet (dc) = 3
Triple (or treble) Crochet (tr) = 4
Double Triple Crochet (dtr) = 5
Remember: These are the recommended turning chains – they are not always used by Designers when writing patterns – you should always follow the specific instructions in the Designer’s Pattern as they are written.

Thank you Anne 🙂
Thank you so much for this!!! I’m an experienced knitter, but still very new to crochet (and loving it!). Especially as a Lefty, I’m thankful for references like this which I can refer to!
