Special Stitches
Long Stitches
- When working the long hdc (lhdc) and long double crochet (ldc) stitches, we work into the ch1sp that falls 2 rows below the current row. We work around the work (enclosing the rows) for the stitch.
- Long stitches are made by pulling the ‘yarn over and pull up a loop’ section of the stitches, to the height of a regular stitch being worked in the current row. For example for the long double crochet you will: yarn over, insert hook into the specified chsp, yarn over and pull up 1 loop to the height of a regular stitch in the current row, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
- Photo tutorials follow the written pattern.
Color Changes
- I used my main color yarn (green) from Row 1 to Row 7. I finished off the color at the end of Row 7.
- I joined my contrast color yarn (cream) at the beginning of Row 8 using a slip stitch and worked Row 8 and 9 in the contrast color. I finished off the contrast color at the end of Row 9.
- I joined my main color at the beginning of Row 10, using a slip stitch join. I worked the scarf in my main color yarn until the end of Row 15, then finished off the main color.
- I joined the contrast color with a slip stitch at the beginning of Row 16 and worked Row 16 and 17 in the contrast color, finishing off at the end of Row 17.
- The main color yarn was joined at the beginning of Row 18 with a slip stitch join and used for the remainder of the project.
Helpful Tutorial
Notes:
- Multiple of 4+3 for the turning chain
- When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. I recommend working under the back bar / back bump of the chain for this project as it gives you the finished edge that matches the last row worked for this project.
- Initial ch 3 counts as 1 dc. This means the ch 3 is the first stitch of the row.
- To make this scarf longer, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.
- To make this scarf wider, work more rows.
- Photo tutorial follows the pattern.

Finishing Instructions
- Weave in your ends.
The Larksfoot stitch is a joy to crochet, and the yarn gives this scarf a soft, luxurious finish. If you’re ready to try a new stitch and use up some DK yarn from your stash, give the easy crochet scarf pattern a try. You can change colors every 2 rows for a colorful scarf, or only change colors for a few of the sections for a more subdued and subtle look. Have fun!
