Supplies

  • Lion Brand Yarn. Vanna’s Choice Yarn. 3.5 oz (100 g), 170 yds (156 m). 100% Acrylic. Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash warm. Tumble dry. Dry Clean any Solvent. Do not bleach.
  • Crochet Hook: 5.5 mm (I) 
  • Finished Yardage: Afghan Square: 65 to 90 yards
  • Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker

Difficulty Level

  • Easy

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this project just remember when you substitute the finished size of your project may also be different.

Finished Size

  • Winter Bloom Afghan Square approximately 12 inches X 12 inches.

Gauge

  • Approximately 7 hdc in 2 inches and 4 rows in 2 inches.
  • First 4 rounds measures 4 inches in diameter.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

This floral afghan square is worked in rounds.

Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or the size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: With Color A, in a DMR, ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1) and (1 dc, ch 1) 7 times. Sl st to the top of the initial ch 3 to join. [8 dc, 8 ch1sp]

Rnd 2: Sl st into the next ch1sp. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the same ch1sp. Ch 1, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, ch 1, sk 1 st. *3 dc in the next ch1sp, ch 1, sk 1 st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, ch 1, sk 1 st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the top of the initial ch 3 to join. Finish off Color A. [4 sc, 4 3-dc groups, 8 ch1sp]

Rnd 3: With Color B, join with a sl st in the second dc of any 3-dc group. Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1), 1 dc in the same st, ch 1, sk 1 st, (2 dc in the next ch1sp, ch 1, sk 1 st) 2 times. *(1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the second dc of the next 3-dc group, ch 1, sk 1 st, (2 dc in the next ch1sp, ch 1, sk 1 st) 2 times. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the top of the initial ch 3 to join. [24 dc, 16 ch1sp]

Rnd 4: Sl st into the next ch1sp. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc in the same ch1sp, sk 1 st, sl st in the next ch1sp. Sk 2 sts, 5 dc in the next ch1sp, sk 2 sts, sl st in the next ch1sp. *Sk 1 st, 5 dc in the next ch1sp, sk 1 st, sl st in the next ch1sp. Rnd 5: With Color C, join with a sc in the BL of the third dc of any corner 5-dc group, ch 1, 1 sc in the BL of the same st. 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 dc, 1 hdc in the next sl st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 5 dc, 1 hdc in the next sl st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 dc. *1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc in the BL of the next dc, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 dc, 1 hdc in the next sl st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 5 dc, 1 hdc in the next sl st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 dc**.
