To make my Wild Floret Hat you will need Chunky Weight Yarn [5] (also known as Bulky Weight Yarn) and a 6 mm (J) crochet hook.

Supplies

  • Yarn: King Cole Safari Chunky (check your local yarn shop here). Find it online here. (affiliate link) 5.29 oz (150 g) and 311 yds (285 m). 100% Premium Acrylic. Chunky Weight Yarn [5]. Machine wash (gentle; 30 degrees) and tumble dry (low).
  • Colors: 1 skein Wilderness (5003)
  • Crochet Hook: 6 mm (J) Furls Streamline Metal (affiliate link)
  • Finished Project: Adult Large: 2.2 oz (63 g) and 130 yds (120 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle), Stitch Marker (optional)

These hats are designed to fit between mid-ear and the base of the earlobe. If you would like your hat to be longer, simply work more repeat rounds. Hats will stretch approximately 2-3 inches in circumference with wear.

  • Preemie height 4.25 inches X 10 inches circumference
  • Newborn height 4.75 inches X 12 inches circumference
  • 0-3 months height 5.5 inches X 14 inches circumference
  • 3-6 months height 5.75 inches X 15 inches circumference
  • 6-12 months height 6 inches X 16 inches circumference
  • 12-24 months height 6.5 inches X 16 inches circumference
  • Small Child (age 3-5 years) height 7 inches X 17 inches circumference
  • Child Hat (age 6-10 years) height 7.5 inches X 18 inches circumference
  • Teen Hat height 7.9 inches X 19 inches circumference
  • Adult Hat (Medium) height 7.9 inches X 20 inches circumference
  • Adult Hat (Large) height 8.5 inches X 21 inches circumference

Gauge

Approximately 9 double crochet per 3 inches and 4 rows in double crochet per 3 inches.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: 2
  • I use a DMR (double magic ring) to begin my projects that are worked in the round. You may substitute a magic ring (magic circle), or a chain 3 and slip stitch to form a ring, if you prefer.
  • The initial ch-3 counts as 1 dc.
  • The initial ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
  • The slip stitch (sl st) to join does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it. Make your slip stitch to join tightly.
  • I use an invisible join to neatly finish my project. You may substitute a slip stitch to join if you prefer.

This project is crocheted in joined rounds from the top-down. 

Preemie Wild Floret Hat

Using your 6 mm (J) hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 3 (does not count as a stitch, now and throughout), make 12 dc in the ring. Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join. [12 dc]

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join. [24 dc]

Rnd 3: RS: Ch 3, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join. TURN.  [30 dc]

Rnd 4: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), 1 sl st in the first st, 1 dc in the next st. *1 sl st in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. TURN. [15 sl st, 15 dc]
