Warm Woolen Hat Pattern

When you purchase through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission.
Here’s how it works.

My Warm Woolen Hat is an easy to crochet project that is made from the bottom-up. We start by crocheting the hat band in rows and then add the main hat right into the completed hat band. This hat is made in one-piece so you will only have 2 ends to sew in when you are done.

The gentle rolling texture is created with basic crochet stitches, single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc).

If you love how this looks be sure to pick up a copy of the matching scarf pattern to make the perfect crochet gift set.

Crocheted hat in Aran Tweed Yarn with a ribbed band and slouchy top on a wood background.

Disclaimer: The yarn used for this project was given to me by King Cole Yarns. If you’d like to try their yarns you can find your local King Cole Yarn Stockist here. Find all my free crochet patterns designed using King Cole Yarn here.

The Yarn

The yarn I chose to use for this month’s hat was given to me by King Cole Yarns. Fashion Aran yarn is a warm and cozy blended yarn that is available in 100 gram balls with 219 yards (200 meters) of yarn per ball. I selected Kintyre (Shade 318) for this project. I love the little tweed flecks that are distributed throughout the strands of yarn, it gives the fabric interest without overpowering the stitches that were used.

This durable yarn is 30% wool and 70% premium acrylic and perfect for warm woolen garments like hats, scarves and mittens, as well as, other projects like sweaters, blankets and pillows.

This yarn is currently available in a wide-range of colors and tweed-effect shades. See them all right here.

  • 0-3 month baby hat size approximately 12 inches circumference X 5.25 inches height
  • 3-6 month baby hat size approximately 14 inches circumference X 5.5 inches height

Finishing Instructions:

  • We will be closing the top of the hat using my simple closing method
  • This method is demonstrated here.
  • There may be a small hole remaining at the top of the hat for the larger sizes.
  • I used the remaining yarn on my yarn needle to sew four stitches (across the diameter of the hole) to close the small gap that remained after closing the top. If you prefer, you may use a pom pom to hide the small hole, or weave through the loops a second time using the simple closing method.
  • Weave in any remaining ends securely.
