Today I’d like to share my new free pattern for the Verna Puff Stitch Hat. I’ve had quite a few requests for this design since I released the Verna Puff Stitch Infinity Scarf and the Verna Ear Warmer Patterns. You can mix and match your Scarf set now with either the hat, or the earwarmer design. The hat is finished on top so you don’t need a pom pom to cover anything up; however, I do think a pom pom would look lovely if you are a pom pom person 🙂

Verna Puff Stitch Hat Pattern

Supplies

• • Yarn: Red Heart Soft Essentials. 5 oz (141 g) and 131 yds (120 m). 100% Acrylic. Bulky Weight Yarn [5]. No Dye Lot. Machine Wash and Dry.
  • Colors: 2 skein of Cream 7103
  • Hook: 6.5 mm (K). 
  • Finished Project Yardage: Adult Hat:  154 g (5.46 oz) /131.06 m (143.08 yds)
  • Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker

Difficulty Level

Easy-Intermediate

Finished Size

Adult Hat width approximately 21 inches X 9 inches height before seaming and without stretching.

Gauge

Approximately 8 rows of puff stitch per 4 inches and 5 sets of (puff stitch, ch 1) worked in pattern per 4 inches

3 stitches per inch (FPdc/BPdc or sc), 2 rows per inch

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Abbreviations

FPBPdc2tog – front post, back post double crochet 2 stitches together

FPdc – front post double crochet

FPdc2tog – front post double crochet 2 stitches together

ps – puff stitch

R – row

rem – remaining

rep – repeat

sk – skip

sl st – slip stitch

st/sts – stitch/stitches

* to **– Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain of multiple instructions.

[] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches

() – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space

 

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch (ps)

*Yarn over the hook, insert the hook into the specified stitch (or space), yarn over and pull up 1 loop**. Rep from * to ** 4 times. You will now have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all nine loops to complete the stitch.

Tip: Keep the hook part of  your hook pointing downwards and pull up slightly on the hook as you are pulling the last yarn over through. It will help the hook slide through along the back straight edge without grabbing the other loops and snagging.

Front Post, Back Post Double Crochet 2 Together (FPBPdc2tog)

Yarn over the hook, insert the hook around the post of the first st (from front to back to front), yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook. You have 2 loops remaining on your hook. Yarn over the hook, insert the hook around the post of the next st (from back to front to back), yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull over the remaining 3 loops on the hook.

Note: This is basically a regular dc2tog except we are working in the posts of the stitches. Since the pattern is alternating with a FPdc then a BPdc, we are simply following along with this to make the dc2tog in the posts.

Notes:

• Stitch multiple is 2 + 4
• I work into the back bar of the starting chain row, this is the loop just behind and beneath the back loop. I find it provides more elasticity to the foundation row. You may work under whichever loop/loops you prefer.
• The ch 3 at the beginning of the puff stitch rows is a double crochet but for the purposes of making this easy-to-follow (and easier-to-write) we are going to refer to it as a ch3sp for the instructions.
• The ch 2 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.

This hat is worked lengthwise in rows, until R10. Then the hat is worked in continuous rounds.  

Using your 6.5 mm (K) hook (or size required for gauge):

 

R1: (RS) Leave an 8-10 inch tail of yarn for seaming and ch 51, 1 sc in each ch across. Turn. [50 sc]

R2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each st across. Turn. [50 dc]

R3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 FPdc in the next st. *1 BPdc in the next st, 1 FPdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** across. Turn. [1 dc, 25 FPdc, 24 BPdc]

R4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 FPdc in the next st. *1 BPdc in the next st, 1 FPdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** across. Turn. [1 dc, 25 FPdc, 24 BPdc]

R5: Ch 3 (counts as ch3sp), 1 ps in the next st. *Ch 1, sk the next st, 1 ps in the next st**. Rep from * to ** across to the last st. Ch 1, sk the next st, 1 ps in the last st.  Turn. [25 ps, 24 ch1sp, 1 ch3sp]

R6-R8: Ch 3 (counts as ch3sp), 1 ps in the next st. *Ch 1, sk the next st, 1 ps in the next st**. Rep from * to ** across to the last st. Ch 1, sk the next st, 1 ps in the last st.  Turn. [25 ps, 24 ch1sp, 1 ch3sp]

R9: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), sk the next ps. *1 dc in the next ch1sp, 1 dc in the next ps**. Rep from * to ** across to the ch3sp. 1 dc in the top of the next ch. Sl st to the top of the initial ch 3 to join. [50 dc]

From this point on, we will be working in continuous rounds. We do not slip stitch to join at the end of the round. 

R10: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 1 FPdc around the initial ch 3 from R9. *1 BPdc in the next st, 1 FPdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** around. [25 FPdc, 25 BPdc]

R11-R18 : Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 1 FPdc in the next st. *1 BPdc in the next st, 1 FPdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** around. [25 FPdc, 25 BPdc]

R19: FPBPdc2tog around. [25 FPdc]

R20: FPdc2tog around, 1 FPdc in the last st. [13 FPdc]

R21: FPdc2tog around, 1 FPdc in the last st. Finish off leaving an 8-10 inch tail of yarn for closing the top of the hat. [7 FPdc] 

 

Finishing

Using my Simple Closing Method for Hats, close the top of the hat and weave in your end.

Using a whipstitch seam, close the two side edges of the hat from R1 to R9. Weave in your remaining yarn ends.
