Here’s how it works.
Featuring pretty puff stitches in a soft and warm wool blend yarn, the Upcycled Puff Stitch Hat is a wonderfully cozy accessory. This hat is made from the bottom-up in one-piece. With just one ball of Upcycled Alpaca Blend Yarn, you can make your own hat with the free crochet pattern located in my post below.
Upcycled Puff Stitch Crochet Hat Pattern
I was recently contacted by Hobbii Yarn to ask if I’d like to try a new yarn they’d developed called Upcycled Alpaca Blend. I shared about this in a post on Instagram a couple weeks ago (you may have seen it!) and today, I’ve finished the hat I was making. Which means now you can have the pattern to make one for yourself too!
The Yarn
Hobbii’s Upcycled Alpaca Blend is created using 100% upcycled materials. This means it has been created with excess fibers that were left over from producing other items. So instead of tossing those excess fibers out, they’ve been worked into unique color batches of Upcycled Alpaca Blend yarn.
Since each batch is created using colors from past productions, the colors available will change and some hues may not be restocked. So if you see a color available that you love (like this one that I used – which is called Lichen) be sure to order as much as you need all at once for your project because you may not be able to order more at a later date.
Each ball contains approximately 100 gr (3.5 oz) which is 200 m (218 yds). The blend is made with 33% alpaca, 33% wool and 34% acrylic. Together they make a beautifully soft and warm Medium Weight Yarn [4].
The yarn is easy to work with, has very consistent color and I did not run into any knots, tangles or ties. I like the overall look and feel of the yarn and the stitch definition I have achieved with it.

Helpful Tutorial
Notes:
- Ch 1 to turn does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
- To increase the height of the hat to make it more slouchy, work extra repeat rounds.
- The hat is worked in joined, turned rounds. You will slip stitch to join in the first st of the round at the end of every round unless otherwise written. Make your slip stitch tightly. We will not work into these joining slip stitches.
- When I work my sc2tog stitches, I do so using a special technique where I work under the front loops of the 2 stitches. You can see a tutorial on how this is done here (invisible decrease). You may alternately work a regular sc2tog if you prefer.

- Bring the edges of R1 and R69 together, with R69 on top. (see image A)
