Learn how to decrease your stitches easily using a tr3tog (treble crochet 3 together). This beginner friendly crochet tutorial includes a quick tr3tog video tutorial and my step-by-step photo tutorial.
tr3tog tutorial
A tr3tog is a crochet term that is used in US crochet patterns. For UK crochet patterns this would be called a dtr3tog (double treble crochet 3 together).
What does tr3tog mean?
A tr3tog is a crochet abbreviation that is used for “treble crochet 3 together”. This stitch is used when a Crochet Designer wants you to decrease your stitches by two stitches. Rather than skipping 2 stitches, we make a tr3tog to combine 3 treble stitches into a single stitch.
How do I crochet a tr3tog?
This stitch is used to decrease 3 stitches into 1 treble crochet stitch. We do this by making 3 partial treble stitches (we complete them to the last yarn over for each of the stitches) and then we do one final yarn over to pull through the remaining 4 loops on your hook.
SHORT VERSION
tr3tog – *Yo twice, insert hook in next st, yo and pull up 1 loop, (yo and pull through 2 loops) twice**. Work from * to ** three times total. Yo, pull through all rem loops.
LONG VERSION
tr3tog – Yarn over the hook two times, insert your hook into the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook. (Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook) twice. You now have 2 loops on your hook. Yarn over the hook two times, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. You will have 5 loops on your hook. (Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook) twice. You will now have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over the hook two times, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. You will have 6 loops on your hook. (Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook) twice. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops to complete the stitch.

Step 3 – pull up a loop (you have 4 loops on your hook)
Step 4 – yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook
Step 5 – you have 3 loops on your hook
Step 6 – yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops on your hook
Step 7 – you have 2 loops on your hook
Step 8 – yarn over the hook twice
Step 9 – insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over the hook
Step 10 – pull up a loop (you have 5 loops on your hook)
Step 11 – yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook
Step 12 – you have 4 loops on your hook
Step 13 – yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops on your hook
Step 14 – you have 3 loops on your hook
Step 15 – yarn over the hook twice
Step 16 – insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over the hook
Step 17 – pull up a loop (you have 6 loops on your hook)
Step 18 – yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook
Step 19 – you have 5 loops on your hook

Sometimes a crochet pattern will ask you to make a cluster stitch using treble crochet stitches. For example a tr3tog cluster stitch is the same as a tr3tog worked in a single stitch. This method does not decrease the number of stitches in the row but instead adds a design element (a puffy stitch) to the project.
