The Super Slouch Hat was originally designed by Danyel Pink.
I know there are only a million other slouch hat patterns out there, but I haven’t found one that works well for me, so I whipped up my own. It’s quick & easy… and is great for BHDs (Bad Hair Days).

Super Slouch Hat Pattern
Supplies
- Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. 3.53 oz (100 g), 170 yds (155 m). 100% Acrylic. Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash and dry. Tumble dry. Do not bleach. Dry-Cleanable.
- Crochet Hook: 5.5 mm (I), 6 mm (J), 6.5 mm (K) and 9 mm (M/N)
- Finished Yardage: 130-150 yds
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker
Other yarns that work well: I Love this Yarn, or any other sturdy Worsted Weight Yarn will work.
Difficulty Level
- Easy
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this project, just remember when you substitute the finished size of your project may also be different.
Finished Sizes
- Child (19-21”), Adult (21-23”)
Gauge
- Approximately 5 hdc and 5 rounds in 2 inches with a 6.5 mm (K) hook (if yours is a little bigger that’s fine!)
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

- BPsc – back post single crochet
- ch – chain
- DMR – double magic ring
- g – grams
- hdc – half double crochet
- m – meters
- oz – ounces
- Rnd – round
- sc – single crochet
- st(s) – stitch/stitches
- yds – yards
- [ ] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches; within the row – a set of instructions to be repeated the given number of times.
- ( ) – important notes AND sets of stitches

- This hat is worked in a continuous spiral.
- Do not join at the end of each round.
- You may substitute a different starting method for the Double Magic Ring (DMR). For options please see this post.
Super Slouch Hat Pattern
This project is worked in continuous spirals without joining.
Super Slouch Hat Both Sizes
Using your 9 mm (M/N) hook:
Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc) and 9 hdc. [10 hdc]
Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each st around. [20 hdc]
Rnd 3: 1 hdc in each st around. [20 hdc]
Rnd 4: 2 hdc in each st around. [40 hdc]
Rnd 5: 1 hdc in each st around. [40 hdc]
Rnd 6: *1 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st.** Work from * to ** around. [60 hdc]
Rnd 7-8: 1 hdc in each st around. [60 hdc]
Using your 6.5 mm (K) hook:
Rnds 9-16: 1 hdc in each st around. [60 hdc]
- If you would like your ADULT hat to be EXTRA slouchy, add a few more rounds with your 6.5 mm (K) hook now.
If you are making an ADULT hat, switch to the 6 mm (J) hook now.
If you are making a CHILD hat, switch to the 5.5 mm (I) hook now.
Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (CHILD) or 6 mm (J) hook (ADULT):
Rnd 17: 1 sc in each st around. [60 sc]
Rnds 18-23: 1 BPsc (not too tightly) in each st around. Too complicated? Too fancy? Work a snug sc in each st instead. [60 BPsc or 60 sc]
- If you’d like a wider band, add a couple more extra rounds.
Proceed to finishing instructions.

- Finish off.
- Weave in ends securely.
