Pumpkin Hat Instructions

0-3 Months, (3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child, Adult)

This project is worked in rows.

Hat Panel

Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or the size required for gauge):

Using orange yarn:

Row 1:  Ch 23 (25, 27, 29, 31, 35), hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, ch 1, turn.  [22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 34) hdc]

Rows 2 – 24 (26, 30, 32, 36, 40): hdc in BL of each hdc across, ch 1, turn. [22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 34) hdc]

Seaming the Hat

  • Join end-to-end and sl st along the entire length of the hat, finish off.
  • Turn the hat right-side out, so the seam is on the inside of the hat.

Once the hat is seamed, you can finish the top with the stem and vine.

Stem (all sizes)

Using green yarn and your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook:

Join with sc at top of hat near seam.  Sc evenly around (1 st per row), do not join.  When you get back to 1st sc, (sc2tog, sc) continuously around until 4-5 sts remain.  Now sc in each st around until you have a 1” stem, finish off.

Curlicue Vine (all sizes, optional)

Using green yarn and your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook:

Ch 15-20.  Work 2-3 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st to end.  Finish off.

Finishing Tips & Options

  • Using the starting and ending tails, tie the vine in between sts near the stem as shown, or sew the vine in place.
  • Weave in any remaining ends.
  • Optional: Single crochet evenly around the unfinished cuff edge of the hat in orange yarn for a smooth, finished look.
  • To vary the ribbing/texture of the pumpkin, crochet every 3rd row through both loops, or work a few rows in double crochet instead.
  • Use red yarn to make an apple, blue yarn for a blueberry, yellow yarn for a bell pepper, etc.
  • Crochet a leaf instead of a vine… or add a small white flower blossom to the hat.

FAQ

How do I adjust the hat size?

Use the sizing chart included in the pattern. Add or remove rows to fit any head size.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes. Medium Worsted Weight [4] yarn works best, but you can use similar yarn weights with gauge adjustments.

Is the vine optional?

Yes. The curlicue vine is a fun accent, but the hat looks great without it too.

How should I wash the finished hat?

Machine wash gently or hand wash. Lay flat to dry to keep its shape.

  1. Hi Ronda, The 36 is referring to how many rows you need to work for that size. The number of stitches does not change after R1. I’ve added it to the end of R2 (the stitch counts) to make that bit easier. This bit: Rows 2 – 24 (26, 30, 32, 36, 40):
means for size 0-3 months: Row 2 to 24, size 3-6 months: Row 2 to 26, Size 6-12 months: Row 2 to 30, Size Toddler: Row 2 to 32, Size Child: Row 2 to 36, and size Adult: Row 2 to 40. That is the total number of rows to work for each of the sizes. 0-3 Months, (3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child, Adult)
    Hope this helps, Rhondda

  2. For the second row for a child size, how do you get 36 half double crochet stitches?
    You only crochet 30 stitches.
    I’m confused!!?
    Thanks,
    Ronda Rose

  3. Hi Christine! Congratulations on your new grandbaby!! I’m so happy it turned out for you and that you enjoyed making it 🙂 Thank you for letting me know, Rhondda
