The Hooktionary: A Book Full of Tapestry Crochet Ideas

Tapestry crochet is a fun way to add pictures, shapes, and patterns to your crochet projects, and The Hooktionary makes it easy to learn. This book stands out because it teaches you how to use different stitches, like split single crochet and extended single crochet, to create clean lines and clear designs. These stitches help your work look neat and professional, even if you’re just starting. The author also shares tips on how to fix mistakes and choose the right stitch for your project, which is super helpful.

Choosing Your Stitch Pattern

I really appreciate the section that shows how the stitch you choose can change the look of your motif. It includes swatches crocheted in different stitch patterns to highlight these differences, such as:

  1. Single Crochet (sc)
  2. Single Crochet in the Back Loop (scblo)
  3. Center single crochet (csc)
  4. Extended single crochet (esc)
  5. Split extended single crochet (sesc)
  6. Front post double crochet (FPdc)

Working from a Color Chart

Detailed instructions are provided to explain how to work from a color chart. A note is also included to help left-handed crocheters with the charts. In this section you’ll learn more about:

  • How to crochet with 2 colors
  • How to work over the yarn
  • How to work joins
  • Leaving floats on the wrong side (floating)
  • How to work colorwork with floats
  • Steeking

Another cool thing about The Hooktionary is that all the designs are worked on the Right Side only. This means you don’t have to turn your work. Making the different motifs perfect for projects worked in the round. The book even explains a special crochet technique called “steeking” to help you finish your pieces in a unique way.

With 150 motifs to pick from, you can mix and match designs to create something that’s totally your own. Whether you want to make fun accessories or add some personality to your home, this book includes everything you need to know to get started with tapestry crochet.

The Swatches

The stitch motif instructions are provided with charts. They are then separated into 5 stitch patterns (which are comparable in size and shape). You can use these charts with any of the stitch patterns you prefer. Written instructions in US crochet terms are included for each of the stitch patterns on pages 8 and 9.

The swatches are shown using the following stitch patterns:

  1. Extended single crochet (pages 21-48)
  2. Center single crochet (pages 49-61)
  3. Front post double crochet (pages 63-73)
  4. Single crochet back loop only (pages 75-85)
  5. Split extended single crochet (pages 86-95)

  1. I love the hearts design but I agree, the Badland Cardigan would be my favorite and a great project to make.
