Beautiful crochet afghan squares inspired by designs by May Morris from the Arts and Crafts Movement.
The Fruit Garden Crochet Blanket
The Fruit Garden Crochet Blanket includes 8 gorgeous crochet afghan square patterns to make an heirloom quality finished blanket.
This gorgeous crochet blanket design was originally released in several parts, in 2020, as an online crochet along (CAL) pattern.
The book format is visually beautifully and includes extras, like photos of finished blankets that were made by crocheters from all around the world.
The paperback also includes deeper insight into the design process for the squares, which was inspired by May Morris. Her beautiful tapestry and hand embrodiery designs also inspired the yarn colors that were recommended in the original colorways.
If you would like to make your Fruit Garden Blanket using one of the suggested colorways, the exact colors and quantities of yarn are listed on pages 26-27.

This book includes 96-pages, complete written instructions and step-by-step photos and is written in UK crochet terms. The pattern notes, Uk and US crochet terms are provided on pages 28-29.
I recommend you read pages 30-31 before you begin as it includes important information about tension (gauge) and what to do if yours does not match the one for the pattern(s). It also tells you the importance of changing your hook size when the pattern indicates a change is necessary.
The Fruit Garden Crochet Blanket Patterns
The Blanket Squares
- Forget-Me-Not
- Columbine
- Clementine
- Aster
- Hollyhock
- Dianthus
- Chrysanthemum
- Acanthus
Each of the squares includes the step-by-step written instructions, a stitch diagram and round by round photos. It also includes an introduction to the square that speaks to the aesthetic and design inspiration that inspired the square, along with an image of the work. You will also find at the beginning of the instructions the total number of square you need to make for the finished blanket.
The first edging is inspired by a barley twist striped border for one of May Morris’ embrodieries. This edging is crocheted around the first set of 25 blocks. The final borders and finishing information is included beginning on page 84.
The Washing, Blocking and Pressing section is found on page 88 and it includes some hints on how to appropriately launder your blanket and block your squares after assembly.
I must share that the book itself is visually beautiful. There are printed designs and edgings on the pages (they aren’t just plain white) and the photography and typeface are clean, tidy and easy to read. The paperback cover is soft to the touch and you will find a continuity of color throughout the entire book.
The specific details included for the patterns, the round by round photos, the stitch diagrams and the introductions that explain how the colors and designs came about, made this book have greater depth to me. It is more than just a pretty book filled with pretty afghan square patterns.
If you enjoy making blankets, afghan squares or other projects using afghan blocks (like the beautiful pillow covers she shared on page 90 – Melsetter & Kelmscott Cushion Covers) then this book with it’s wide range of intricate crochet stitches and pretty floral afghan squares is perfect for your crochet pattern collection.

Oh how I’d love to make this and use it as a long-term project. The flowers are so pretty. I know a few people making this right now and the results are beautiful! I like the darker blue version.
Beautiful colours!
