The Cuffed Shawl and More | Book Review | oombawkadesigncrochet.com

Title: The Cuffed Shawl and More!
Designs by: Shelle Hendrix
Publisher: Leisure Arts, Inc., 2013
ISBN: 978-1-4647-1196-1
Photographer: Jason Masters

The Cuffed Shawl and More! includes a beautiful collection of shawls, ponchos, scarves and wraps.

Each sample shown in the book was created with yarns you can easily find in the store from brands such as Lion Brand, Patons, Red Heart and Caron. You can easily substitute a yarn of your choice by paying attention to the gauge information included in each pattern.

The General Instructions included at the end of the book provide information about the following:

  • Abbreviations
  • Symbols & Terms
  • Gauge
  • Zeros (used to consolidate length in the repeat instructions)
  • Crochet Terminology (U.S. and International)
  • Back Loop Only
  • Free Loops of a Chain
  • Joining with a Single Crochet
  • Crochet Hooks (U.S. and Metric mm)
  • Skill Levels (Beginner to Experienced)
  • Joining with a Double Crochet
  • Front Post Stitch
  • Whipstitch
  • Meet the Designer Section

The different stitch examples in the General Instructions section include illustrated diagrams to provide you with a visual.

Throughout The Cuffed Shawl and More! you will find the Camera Icon. This Camera Icon will be placed in the instructions, every time there is a free online technique video available.

Each design begins with a cover page which lists the difficulty level of the pattern, the finished size(s) and a Shopping List. The Shopping List includes the Yarn you will need for each variation of the design (i.e. with or without a hood), the crochet hook size and any additional supplies (i.e. button(s)).

The Cuffed Shawl and More! includes the following designs:

  • Cuffed Shawl (EASY, Bulky Weight Yarn, 6.5 mm (K) hook)
  • Ruffled Shawl (EASY, Medium Weight Yarn, 5.5 mm (I) hook)
  • Hybrid Scarf (EASY, Medium Weight Yarn, 6.5 mm (K) hook)
  • Button-up Poncho (EASY, Medium Weight Yarn, 5.5 mm (I) hook)

Each of the 4 designs include customization options.

The Button-up Poncho is available in sizes Small/Medium, Large/X-Large and 2X/3X Large. You can make this design with a plain neckline, a collar or a hood. You basically receive 3 designs with just the one set of instructions.

The Cuffed Shawl can be made with, or without a hood. The Ruffled Shawl can be fastened with side buttons to make sleeves and the Hybrid Scarf can be worn in two ways – as a short shawl or as a scarf.

I really love the options available with the four designs. I especially love the Cuffed Shawl and the Button-Up Poncho – both of which I would be happy to wear myself.

The finished sizes of the basic designs are:

Cuffed Shawl: 29″ long by 53″ cuff to cuff
Ruffled Shawl: 62.5″ wide by 25.5″ deep at center point
Hybrid Scarf: 9″ wide by 44″ long at neck edge
Button-Up Poncho: 22.25″ long by 45″ wide (S/M), 22.5″ long by 49″ wide (L/XL), 23.5″ long by 53″ wide (2X/3X)
