The Basic Knit-Look Hat Pattern

Here’s how it works.
I have designed The Basic Hat Pattern for you to crochet. This hat is crocheted back and forth in rows in medium weight [4] yarn and it is fitted to your head. It is a crochet hat worked flat! This is an easy to crochet project but I have included a tutorial to teach you how to make it for the first time.

Earlier this year I released The Bulky Hat as part of the Holiday Stashdown CAL and I began working on the medium weight hat version which I am calling The Basic Hat Worked Flat. Since then, my lovely computer (new in April of this year too!) decided to stop working – for 4 weeks the first time AND again last week for 5 more days! To make a long story short, Windows 10 has automatic updates which you cannot turn off – and some of these lovely updates keep ‘fighting’ (yes I’m highly ‘techie’ lol) with my Dell Alienware Computer. Windows wins every time and I have to reformat my hard drive AND reinstall Windows 10 – losing all the data on the hard drive each time. Anywho – this is the reason for the unplanned delay with this post. So if you were waiting for it – I am very sorry!
I have created another hat you can work flat – this hat is crocheted in medium weight [4] yarn and it is fitted to the curve of your head. I’m including two length options for you as well. One to the base of the earlobe (you will see it on my daughter Darla in the photos below) and one which is more slouchy (the one Drew is sporting). If you scroll to the bottom of the post I’ve also included the second hat I made in bright orange (Drew’s new favorite color) in Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. There are video tutorials available to explain how the stitches are worked and how you assemble your hat too – I created them when I crocheted The Bulky Hat. I hope you love this design!
The Basic Hat Pattern. Crochet Hats Worked Flat.
For any of my hat patterns that I have started with a double magic ring (see this tutorial) you can just as easily crochet a regular magic ring or begin by crocheting a chain-3 and slip stitch to join to the first chain to form a ring and then work your stitches directly into that ring.

Notes
- This is a very EASY pattern but you do need to pay attention at the end of the rows, at the top end of the hat.
- The “Work 1 sc in the last sc.” is worked as a regular single crochet stitch under both loops of the stitch. All the other stitches are worked in the BL only of the stitches.
- Two hat heights have been provided in each pattern listing below. The first is an ear length hat height and the second is the slouch length. The slouch length is the hat pattern I used to make my own hat as it allows me to roll up the brim when I wear it.
- I spent a great deal of time working on and editing this pattern and then even more time writing it out – I have tried to ensure there are no number errors but if you do come across something you suspect is a typo please (please!) let me know. There were a lot of changes that needed to made for every size in the written instructions below and these were done manually line by line 🙂

Child (7-10 years)
Finished Sized: 8 (9) inches tall by 18 inches circumference. To fit a 21″ head size.

Assembly
Finish off leaving a long tail of yarn to allow you to whip-stitch the final seam of the hat and close the top small hole of the hat.
When you are whip-stitching the hat, work in the BL of the stitches and the leftover chain loop from the beginning R1 of the hat. Each stitch will have a matching chain all the way to the top of the hat.
Once you get to the top of the hat you will be using your yarn needle and yarn end to weave back and forth through the row ends (under one loop of the row end stitch only) all the way around the center opening. Once you reach the seam, pull snugly to close the hat top completely. You can view this photo tutorial >CLICK HERE< for help.
Hi Christine! Sweet Rolls is a #4 yarn – thank you for catching this!! I will correct it :)I know what you mean about yarn availability – it can make it difficult matching up yarns for patterns you like. Have you tried this site? it helps find options for yarns when the yarn being used isn’t available in Canada. https://yarnsub.com/ All the best, Rhondda
Hi Rhondda, just noticed pattern says Sweet Rolls are #5 Bulky. I thought this pattern was for #4 weight. I can’t get a lot of US yarns in Australia so I’ve been using #4.
Hi Christine, I think because of where it is located it may not be too noticeable – especially if you did each segment the same. The hats tend to stand up really well (I thought I’d mention this) – my son is still wearing the bright orange one I made in Super Saver Yarn (he loves that hat) – I honestly can’t believe it has made it through 2 winters and not been lost (maybe the color?). Have a great week and thank you again for letting me know about the mistake – I really appreciate being able to fix it! Night! Rhondda
Hi Rhondda, thanks so much for this. I also watched the video and thought that might have been what I should have done, 1 sl st, 1 sc but I was too far through the pattern to change, lol.
Hi Chris ๐ I think I figured out what is happening. It should say 1 sl st in the next unworked ch and 1 sc in the last unworked ch. For EVERY size – I apologize for this mistake and I am going in to update it all now. Thank you for taking the time to let me know there was a problem so I could fix it!! My video came in helpful for me too because I watched it to double check to see what I had written down incorrectly. Thank you again!! Rhondda (PS I’m happy the hat turned out for you even with the mistake I made!).
I should have stated that my stitch count is 27 on row 9 and 19 because of the sl st and 2 sc when pattern states it should be 26.
Iโm having trouble with the stitch count. Iโm making the toddler size when I get to the end of row 8 my count is 24 as stated but the next row says to sl st in next unworked st then sc in last 2 unworked sts for a count of 26. Same for row 18 in segment 2. If you could explain I would be forever grateful. I made one hat and it looks great but my stitch count isnโt right. Thanks in advance for your help.
