This hat is VERY easy to make – using only single crochet stitches and single crochet 2 together stitches throughout the entire pattern.

Simply Serene Hat - Modelled - Free Pattern

The finished hat can be crocheted in a solid color, or in stripes of color. This pattern was designed using the new 24/7 Cotton Yarn from Lion Brand Yarns. This is a 100% Mercerized Cotton and a medium weight [4] yarn. Each ball has 3.5 oz (100g); 186 yd (170 m). It is machine washable and dryable and beautiful to work with…the color range is spectacular too! 24 different colors! Check this video out to see them!

When I sat down to design this hat I had a very specific purpose in mind. The CLICK for Babies Campaign – to educate new parents and communities about the period of PURPLE crying many babies go through. You can read all about this Campaign and how you can help in my upcoming post this Sunday, March 27, 2016.

I decided to also offer the other sizes in this hat pattern because I believe it will make a great chemo cap – it is soft and super breathable when made in cotton – the size is designed to fit to the base of the earlobe and the stitches do not have wide spaces between them so you have full coverage. You can make it in a solid color, in stripes or with a wide band of color – totally up to you and easy to achieve a unique look by changing up the colors of the 2-repeat rows.

This hat is easy enough for a determined beginner to try as it uses only basic crochet stitches.

I hope the Sweetly Serene Hat becomes another one of your favorite charity crochet hat patterns.

Blessings to you all, Rhondda

How to Add Change Colors on the Last Yarn Over

Notes

  • Stitch Multiple 2
  • Do not sl st to join unless indicated.
  • Color changes are simple on this hat 🙂 You can get the effect I did on Darla’s striped hat, simply by changing colors every 2 rounds (the first round will be a *2 sc in next sc, sk next ch1sp** round and the 2nd round must be the one immediately following it). Change color on the last yarn over of the last stitch (not chain) of the row before the one you want the new color to be starting on. See helpful tutorials for this technique. The exact instructions were included in the 6-10 year size for the hat Darla is wearing in the photo.
  • These hats have been designed to reach the base of the ear.
  • Change the height of this hat easily by adding 2 rounds for each half inch of height you want; or decrease 2 rounds for each half inch (0.5″) of height you want to remove.
  • Hat too tight – please check your gauge.  If your chain stitches are tiny and tight your hat will likely not fit. Please measure your gauge to be sure – visually speaking the chain loops will be the same size as your sc2tog loops…if they look smaller you may have a gauge problem.
  • These hats are based on maths – to standard head sizes. Not all heads will be the standard size – I mean honestly – we are human and we are all different. Gauge is super important for fitted garments – especially items like hats! So, if you are substituting yarn and hook be sure you understand how to check your gauge properly.

  1. I’m hoping to make some of these hats for a charity project at my local hospital, but I’m stumped; what does MR stand for? (As in “Ch 3, 6 sc in MR”)

  2. Hi Beverley! Thank you SO much for catching this! I of course carried through the missing “sc” into every single size of the pattern! Updating right now!! Thank you again 🙂 Best of luck with the hat! Rhondda

  3. In size 6-10 you’re missing “sc” in R2. It says:
    R2: 2 in each sc…

    But should be:
    R2: 2 sc in each sc…

I’m on round 3 so far, my second hat ever 🙂 Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
