Sweet Hugs Hat

A few years ago I designed a hat for my niece called My Dainty Princess Baby Hat and I have been inundated with requests for the hat in other sizes. Many requests have been received to make this in adult sizes as a chemo cap. I am happy to provide to you the Sweet Hugs Hat based on my original Dainty Princess Hat. This hat works in the same stitch pattern from the very beginning to give you an completely seamless hat from start to finish. I have also included an alternate edging which can be substituted for any size hat (you can see it in the preemie size hat sample I have crocheted).

I chose this yarn specifically for the design because it is the softest and the best yarn for hospital donations, babies and for chemo caps. You can read more about the yarn HERE.  It is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I certified! I love working with it and I recommend it to everyone who is looking for a yarn to use for preemies, newborns or chemo caps. This yarn is available in 2 different weights; this pattern requires the Lightweight yarn [3].

  • The increase rounds of the hat will be slightly wavy but don’t fret it works itself out as you go 🙂
  • Keep your gauge consistent or the hat will not fit!

EDGING OPTIONS

Pick either edging to work on your finished hat! Edging 1 is like the one Darla is wearing in the photo (the original edging from the Dainty Princess Hat); the other edging is shown on the Preemie Sized Hat. If you choose Edging 2 (Preemie sized hat) you MUST crochet those single crochet stitches in a very relaxed tension. Your gauge must match the same gauge (3 stitches per inch) as the rest of the hat!! If you can’t make them 3 sc per inch, use Edging 1.

EDGING 1

R1: Sl st into the dc space, (2 hdc and 1 sl st) into the same space. *Ch 1, (1 sl st, 2 hdc and 1 sl st) in the next dc space.** Rep from * to ** around. Finish off with an invisible join and weave in ends.

EDGING 2

R1: Sl st into the dc space, 1 sc in the bl of each st around.

R2: Do not join with a sl st. 1 sc in the bl of each st around. Finish off with an invisible join and weave in end.

Hi Ann, No there are not any chains in a magic ring. You can watch my video here to see how to make one: https://oombawkadesigncrochet.com/secure-double-magic-ring-tutorial/ All the best, Rhondda

Are there 6 chains in the magic ring?

Hi Brian, Yes 🙂 That is correct. You skip the ch 3, and the first hdc (other than the sl st to join). You skip the ch 3 to join in the first hdc of the round then work a sl st into the next dc space.
I created a video to help with that here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRGzoiO82ck&feature=youtu.be

    All the best, Rhondda

To join, I skip the ch 3 and sl st into the top of the hdc, and then sl st into the next dc space? So, I’m skipping the entire first dc hdc

Hi! I love this pattern! How would I go about changing it if I wanted to use a DK weight yarn?

No worries Eileen! Thank you for letting me know – I totally meant to add the images and I forgot. I was too excited to release the pattern 😉 Have a lovely week! Rhondda

Hi Eileen! My apologies – I am in the process of making a photo for this but what I meant was the space between the hdc and the next double crochet. So instead of working straight into the next dc as we normally do work into the space beneath the top bits of the stitch (so the stitch is working around both the front and back loop of the dc and the back bar (from the yarn over) of the double crochet. Hope this helps until I can get my photo uploaded!! All the best, Rhondda

Hi Reba! The MR is a Magic Ring – and here is the link to the tutorial: https://oombawkadesigncrochet.com/magic-ring-magic-circle-tutorial/ I thought I’d added the abbreviation to the list but I will go and double check and add a link to the tutorial too 🙂 Thank you for letting me know it was unclear 🙂 All the best, Rhondda

I’m afraid I don’t understand this pattern. How do I start it, what is “MR”? I do know how to crochet but the beginning of this pattern has me stumped! Sorry to sound like such a newbie, hope you can help. Thank you.

Hi, Rhondda–I started to make a Sweet Hugs hat (so cute) for the Little Hats, Big Hearts drive. But I don’t know what it means to slip stitch “into the dc space.” The pattern refers to a photo, but I can’t find a photo of where that space is. I’ve tried to find it on other parts of your site, but no luck. I’m sure it will seem obvious once you tell me where to look, but for now I’m stumped. Help? Thanks!
