Crochet the March Madness Hat in Any Size! Free Pattern

This 1-skein pattern features an easy 1-row repeat, simple stitches and multiple sizes! Make it with or without the brim.

The Yarn

For this month’s Crochet Club Patterns, I used King Cole Celestial Super Chunky Weight Yarn. This 99% acrylic yarn (the polyester sparkle strand makes up the other 1% of the yarn) is soft, warm and the perfect choice for winter and fall wearables.

March Madness Hat Crochet Pattern

Supplies

  • Yarn: King Cole. Celestial Super Chunky. 3.5 oz (100 g) and 120 yds (110 m). 99% Premium Acrylic and 1% Polyester. Super Bulky Weight Yarn [6]. Gentle wash at 30°C, dry flat, do not tumble dry, do not iron, do not bleach. Dry clean, any solvent.
  • Color: 1 skein Juniper.
  • Crochet Hook: 5 mm (H) for the hat band and 7 mm for main hat
  • Finished Project: Hat: 3.3 oz (93 g) and 112 yds (102 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle), 2 one-inch buttons

These hats are designed to reach mid-ear.

  • Preemie: 11 inches circumference X 4 inches height
  • Newborn: 13 inches circumference X 4.5 inches height
  • 0-3 months: 15 inches circumference X 5.5 inches height
  • 3-6 months: 16 inches circumference X 5.5 inches height
  • 6-12 months: 17 inches circumference X 6 inches height
  • 12-24 months: 18 inches circumference X 6.5 inches height

Gauge

  • Approximately 9 sts per 4 inches and 8 rows per 4 inches worked in pattern stitch.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Notes:

  • Multiple of 1
  • If you’d like to increase the hat height, work more repeat rounds.
  • The hat is worked in continuous rounds without joining.
  • When slip stitches are worked (for the hat brim) they are not counted as stitches and we do not work into them.
  • Omit the buttons for the baby sizes. You can embroider or add a hand sewn embellishment in their place that is baby-safe.

March Madness Brimmed Cap Crochet Pattern

This project is crocheted from the top down in unjoined rounds and the hat brim is added directly to the hat without finishing off your yarn.

Preemie March Madness Hat

Using your 7 mm crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Make 10 hdc in the DMR. [10 hdc]

Rnd 2: 2 hdc in the back bar of each st around. [20 hdc]

Rnd 3: *2 hdc in the back bar of the next st, 1 hdc in the back bar of each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [25 hdc]

Rnd 4-Rnd 7: 1 hdc in the back bar of each st around. [29 hdc]

Rnd 8: 1 sc in the back bar of each st around. [29 sc]

Do not finish off. Proceed to the Hat Brim section below.

Hat Brim

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook and working in turned rows:

Row 1: 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in each of the next 9 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next st, sk all rem sts. Ch 1, turn. [20 sc]

Row 2: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 20 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Ch 1, turn. [21 sc]

Row 3: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 21 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Ch 1, turn.  [22 sc]

Row 4: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 22 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Ch 1, turn.  [23 sc]

Row 5: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 23 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Do not finish off. [24 sc]

Using your 7 mm crochet hook: 

Continue working around the hat making 1 BPsc in each st of the hat until you reach the base of the hat brim. Do not finish off. [10 BPsc]

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook:

Make 1 sl st in each stitch in the hat brim back to the main hat. Sl st to join (tightly). [24 sl st]

Proceed to Finishing Instructions.

Newborn March Madness Hat

Using your 7 mm crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Make 10 hdc in the DMR. [10 hdc]

Using your 7 mm crochet hook: 

Continue working around the hat making 1 BPsc in each st of the hat until you reach the base of the hat brim. Do not finish off. [25 BPsc]

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook:

Make 1 sl st in each stitch in the hat brim back to the main hat. Sl st to join (tightly). [38 sl st]

Proceed to Finishing Instructions.

Adult Medium March Madness Hat

Using your 7 mm crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Make 10 hdc in the DMR. [10 hdc]

Rnd 2: 2 hdc in the back bar of each st around. [20 hdc]

Rnd 3: *2 hdc in the back bar of the next st, 1 hdc in the back bar of the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [30 hdc]

Rnd 4: *2 hdc in the back bar of the next st, 1 hdc in the back bar of each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [40 hdc]

Rnd 5: *2 hdc in the back bar of the next st, 1 hdc in the back bar of each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [50 hdc]

Rnd 6-Rnd 14: 1 hdc in the back bar of each st around. [50 hdc]

Rnd 15: 1 sc in the back bar of each st around. [50 sc]

Do not finish off. Proceed to the Hat Brim section below.

Hat Brim

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook and working in turned rows:

Row 1: 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in each of the next 17 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next st, sk all rem sts. Ch 1, turn. [36 sc]

Row 2: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 36 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Ch 1, turn. [37 sc]

Row 3: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 37 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Ch 1, turn.  [38 sc]

Row 4: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 38 sts, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the hat. Ch 1, turn.  [39 sc]

Using your 7 mm crochet hook: 

Continue working around the hat making 1 BPsc in each st of the hat until you reach the base of the hat brim. Do not finish off. [28 BPsc]

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook:

Make 1 sl st in each stitch in the hat brim back to the main hat. Sl st to join (tightly). [42 sl st]

Proceed to Finishing Instructions.

Finishing Instructions:

  • Finish off and weave in the yarn ends on the inside of the hat.
  • Add 1 button on each side of the hat where the main hat and the hat brim touch (see images for placement).
  • Important: Omit the buttons for the baby sizes. You can embroider or add a hand sewn embellishment in their place that is baby-safe.
