Happy Moogly CAL 2025 Crochet Friends! I hope you love the design I made for you to make this year. My Snow Covered Garden Square pattern is beginner friendly, you just need to know where to place your hook for the stitches as some are worked in the front loop, and others in the back loop.

I have created a video tutorial to assist you with any bits you might need help with! Or you can view the round by round photos included at the end of the pattern.

The forever free version of the pattern is below and includes all the instructions written out, step by step. You can print a copy for yourself using the print button in my post.

If you’d prefer you can purchase an ad-free copy from my shop on Ravelry which also includes the square in charted form.

I’d like to thank Tamara for inviting me to be a designer for her crochet along again this year. You can see the other squares I’ve designed for previous Moogly CALs here. To find out more about the Moogly CAL 2025 please visit Tamara’s post here. I’ve included a photo of Tamara’s finished square at the end of the post for you to see too!

Abbreviations

US Terminology used

  • bl – back loop
  • ch – chain
  • ch2sp – chain 2 space
  • drdc – dropped double crochet (see Special Stitch)
  • fl – front loop
  • Rnd – round
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • * to ** – Work the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
  • [ ] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
  • { } – within the row – a set of instructions to be repeated the given number of times.
  • ( ) – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch or space.

Special Stitch

Dropped double crochet (drdc): A double crochet stitch worked into the unworked front loop of a stitch located directly below and 2 rounds before.

The stitch will be worked in the front loop of the stitch immediately below the next stitch in the current round. The stitch on the current round will not be worked into, this is indicated in the instructions.

The double crochet stitch is worked as a regular dc stitch: Yarn over, insert the hook under the front loop of the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through last 2 loops.

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • Beginning in Rnd 2 all single crochet stitches are worked in the back loop only, unless otherwise indicated.
  • All double crochet stitches are worked in the front loop only, in the stitch immediately below the next stitch of the round, but made 2 rounds prior.
  • We will be working into the corner chain stitches (NOT the chain spaces), under the back loop only, until the last round. The last round is worked into the ch2sp.
  • White (Color A), Stone (Color B) and Lettuce (Color C).
  • Pattern is written with a ch 2 to begin. I prefer to use a double magic ring to begin, as it is more secure. Either is acceptable for this pattern.
  • TIP: If you are using a ch 2 to begin, leave about a 4-inch yarn tail at the beginning. You will use this yarn tail to close the hole that will be there from using this method to start.
  • Pattern is written with a sl st join at the end of each round. You may use an invisible join instead if you prefer. Either is acceptable for this pattern, when instructed to finish off, up to the last round. Use an invisible join on the last round.
  • TIP: If you are using a sl st to join I recommend you make it very tightly and keep it to the one side (right side if you are right handed, left side if you are left handed) of the stitch. This will give you more room to work into the bl of the same stitch as you proceed to the next round.
  • EXTRA TIP: I work my slip stitch in both loops of the stitch for Round 1 and Round 2 – then in the back loop of the stitch for the remaining rounds. If the front loop gets snug when you do this, use your hook to gently pull the front loop so it regains it’s original size.
  • Pattern does not have a turning chain for each round with a color change because I usually start each new color change round with a standing st. If you prefer a sl st join and a turning chain, feel free to substitute.

I must apologize – I made a mistake in my square and I didn’t notice it until I was editing my videos (so there is no time to remake the square and take new photos). On Round 8 I missed 2 dropped double crochet stitches. I have edited the image with 2 white dots where those should have been placed. The other 3 sides of the square are correct.

  1. Hi Maria, Thank you so much for catching this. I’ve updated the image so the correct one is there now. I appreciate you letting me know so I could fix the image. Best wishes, Rhondda

  2. I have noticed the photos for round 16 and 18 are the same. round 16 is the right one, but 18 is not.
