Here’s how it works.
Yarn: Red Heart With Love (worsted weight)
Hook: 6.0 mm
Stitch Pattern Multiple: work any number of ch sts
Finished Dimensions: 8″ x 8″ Square
Abbreviations: RS – right side, sl st – slip stitch, ch – chain, beg – begin, sc – single crochet, fl – front loop, bl – back loop
Helpful Tutorials:
Note: this stitch pattern shrinks considerably! I chained 10 inches and the finished square before the edging is 7″ square. It actually shrank 3″ in width. Please take this into consideration when working the square. If you think it is going to be too big please wait until you have completed at least 5 rows to be sure.
Gauge: 12 sl st = 3″
R1: (RS): ch 31, beg in the 2nd ch from your hook and work 1 sl st in each ch across, ch 1, turn (30)
R2: 1 sl st in the bl of each st across, ch 1, turn (30)
R3: 1 sl st in the fl of each st across, ch 1, turn (30)
Repeat R2 and R3: 18 times
You are finished the repeats after you complete R39. Do not finish off. Proceed to edging below.
Edging:
Work 1 sc in the corner, turn to work along the side edge. Work 30 sc evenly along the side edge.
Work 1 sc in the corner, turn to work along the starting row edge. Work 30 sc evenly across.
Work 1 sc in the corner, turn to work along the side edge. Work 30 sc evenly along the side edge.
Work 1 sc in the corner, turn to work along the top edge. Work 1 sc in the fl of each st across.
Finish off and weave in ends.
This square needs blocking – the top and bottom rows curl – just like knitting!
The following photo shows the back of the square.
