The Yarn

For this month’s Crochet Club Patterns, I used Red Heart With Love yarn. This 100% acrylic yarn is a joy to work with and comes in a variety of beautiful colors.

The Papaya shade I chose is vibrant and cheerful, adding the perfect splash of color to balance the darker tones of fall and winter.

Red Heart with Love

  • Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4]
  • 100% Acrylic
  • Recommended hook size is 6.5 mm (US K-10 1/2)
  • Machine wash and dry.

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple of 1
  • Initial ch 3 does NOT count as a stitch. The first sc will include a ch 3 and 1 dc.
  • Sl st to join: skip over the ch 3 to join in the first dc of the round.
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
  • To make this hat wider, work more rows using the repeat section of the pattern for the hat band.
  • To make this hat taller, work more rows using the repeat section of the pattern for the hat body.
  • For a wider hat band, chain additional stitches for the hat band section.

Finishing Instructions:

  • Using the 6 inch tail of yarn you left before starting the hat band, sew the two edges of the hat band together using a whipstitch.
  • Finish off and weave in your ends.
  • We will be closing the top of the hat using my simple closing method. This simple closing method is demonstrated here.
  • There may be a small hole remaining at the top of the hat for the larger sizes. I used the remaining yarn on my yarn needle to sew four stitches (across the diameter of the hole) to close the small gap that remained after closing the top. If you prefer, you may use a pom pom to hide the small hole.
  • Weave in any remaining ends securely.
