Here’s how it works.

The Shades of Midnight Infinity Scarf is my March Scarf of the Month Club CAL Pattern. This simple crochet scarf is worked in joined rounds and features beginner friendly crochet stitches.

The third loop (back bar) of the stitch is used to create a simple ridge and a stripe effect. The finished scarf is gender neutral and easy enough for new crocheters to make.

For this project you will need 2 colors of Chunky Weight / Bulky Weight Yarn and a 6 mm (J) crochet hook.

Visit me next week to get the coordinating hat (the Shades of Midnight Hat).

The Yarn I used for this project:

For my Shades of Midnight Infinity Scarf I used 6.5 oz (186 g) / 310 yds (283 m) of Chunky Weight Yarn.

This project used 2 different King Cole Yarns. Shadow Chunky Yarn, in the shade Mercury (Shade: 4008) and Big Value Chunky Yarn, in the shade Midnight (Shade: 3391). You can easily substitute a single color of yarn if you prefer.

I love that the yarn weights are exactly the same for these 2 yarns. That gives me endless color combinations and shades that I can mix and match without worrying about my gauge!

Shadow Chunky Yarn is 100% Premium Acrylic and I love the shades that were blended for each ball of yarn. There aren’t any significant color stripes or chunks as the shades flow into each other so perfectly. The colors have a bit of a watercolored look to them and there is a soft lustre to the stitches when the light hits them.

This yarn is great for winter wearables and bonus! it is machine washable and dryable too.

Big Value Chunky Yarn is 100% Premium Acrylic and available in more than 35 different solid shades. The colors vary from soft pastels to bright jeweltones. The yarn is durable and soft (not scratchy), it doesn’t fluff or pil and I found zero knots in the skeins that I used. This yarn has a soft lustre to it too.

Notes:

  • Add the Shades of Midnight Infinity Scarf Pattern to your Ravelry Library here.
  • Stitch multiple of 1 (any number of stitches)
  • I used a foundation half double crochet to begin but you can easily use a foundation chain instead.
    • Alternate Rnd 1: Ch 191, sk 2 chs, 1 hdc in each rem ch across. Sl st to the first st to join (changing to Color B on the yarn over of the sl st). [190 hdc]
    • Omit Rnd 14 if you are beginning with a foundation chain.
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. This gives the edge a more finished look and is visually the same as the top of the stitches from the final row you will be working for the scarf.  You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
  • To change the scarf length, chain until you reach your desired scarf length.
  • The initial ch 2 counts as 1 hdc.
  • The initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Color A: Midnight, Color B: Mercury
  • Make your color changes on the last yarn over of the slip stitch to join. Carry your unused color up the inside of the infinity scarf to pick it up again on the next round of the same color.
  • The back bar of the stitch is the loop behind and below the back loop. It is also called the 3rd loop.
