Charity Spotlight: Sue Rock Originals Everybody, Inc.

This is Marie from Underground Crafter. I love visiting with Rhondda and the Oombawka Design readers, so I’m glad to be back for another charity spotlight.

I’m highlighting Sue Rock Originals Everybody, Inc., an organization located in my hometown of New York City. The founder, Sue Rock, had a vision of combining two things: distributing handmade projects to survivors of domestic violence, and teaching crochet, knitting, and sewing to children and domestic violence survivors. Sue Rock Originals Everybody, Inc. has been around for over ten years and Sue has received many accolades for her work in support of domestic violence survivors. Sue Rock Originals Everybody, Inc. is a 501(c)3 charity and you can mail donations to:

Sue Rock Originals
50 East 18th Street  A8
Brooklyn, NY  11226
USA

Sue recommends that crocheters think about the life of a domestic violence survivor who has had to leave everything behind to start again before crocheting a project to donate. You can hear more about this in an interview I did with Sue, which you can listen to in your browser below, or download as an audio file here.

As you can hear, garments and accessories that extend the wardrobe – like shawls, bags, ponchos, and jewelry – are the best options for donating. If you live in the New York metropolitan area, you can also reach out to Sue because she often has donated yarn that crocheters can use for their projects.

I designed a free crochet pattern, the Phoenix Wrap, especially for donation to Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. This long, rectangular shawl can be worn several different ways: as a cardigan, as a dramatic wrap, as a hooded scarf, and more! You can see some of the styling options here.

If you need more project inspiration, here are two roundups of free crochet patterns that could help a domestic violence survivor rebuild her wardrobe:
