The Yarn

For this month’s second set of Crochet Club Patterns, I used Crescendo Aran yarn from King Cole. This 100% premium acrylic yarn lovely to crochet with. The subtle variegated colors are twisted with a neutral yarn shade so they flow into each with ease. I love the muted colors and softness of this yarn.

Crescendo Aran Lullaby Yarn King Cole

I chose to use Lullaby (Shade: 5764) for my project and there are 7 additional options available in this line. If you’d like something a little brighter, try Tempo (Shade: 5761).

Front Post Bobble Stitch (FPbo)

This long bobble is made around the post of the specified double crochet stitch. You insert your hook from the front, to the back and then back to the front around the post of the stitch.

Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the next dc, from front to back to front and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook. You will have 2 loops on your hook. *Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the same dc, from front to back to front, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook**. You will have 3 loops on your hook. Work from * to ** 2 more times. You will have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook to complete the stitch.

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple of 6
  • Turning ch 3 does NOT count as a stitch. Do not work into the turning ch 3. The last st in each dc round will be worked into the same st as the sl st to join was made (which also has the ch 3).
  • Initial ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch. The last st in each sc round will be worked into the same st as the sl st to join was made (which also has the ch 1).
  • Sk the dc behind the FPbo stitch.
  • To make the hat shorter, skip some repeat rounds. Each 6 rounds you skip will reduce the height by about 2 inches.
  • This project is crocheted in joined, turned rounds after the hat band.
  • If you would prefer you can whipstitch the 2 edges of the hat band together.
  • Sl st to join is made in the first st of the round.

Proceed to Finishing Instructions.

Finishing Instructions for All Hat Sizes:

  • Finish off leaving a 8 to 10 inch tail of yarn.
  • Close the top of the hat by weaving your yarn end through the front loops of the last round of stitches and cinching the top closed. See this tutorial for help.
  • If there is still a gap at the top, don’t worry! Turn the hat inside out and close the gap by making a stitch from the left side of the gap to the right side (pull to tighten) then from the top of the gap to the bottom (pull to tighten).
  • Weave in ends.
  • Add a pompom if you wish.
