Difficulty Level

Finished Size

Scrubbie width approximately 5.5 inches X 5.5  inches length

Gauge

Approximately 6 rows per 2 inches and 7 sc per 2 inches

After Round 3 approximately 2 inches across

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Abbreviations

US Terminology used

beg – beginning

BL – back loop

bo – bobble

ch – chain

ch1sp – chain 1 space

ch2sp – chain 2 space

dc – double crochet

DMR – double magic ring

pc – popcorn stitch

R – round

rem – remaining

rep – repeat

sc –  single crochet

sk – skip

sl st – slip stitch

st/sts – stitch/stitches

* to **– Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.

[] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches

() – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space

Special Stitches

Bobble (bo) 

*Yarn over, insert hook into specified stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook**. Rep from * to ** 5 times. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the hook to complete the stitch.

Popcorn Stitch (pc)

Work 3 sc stitches into the specified stitch. Remove your hook from the working loop of yarn. Insert your hook through the first sc stitch worked (under both the front and back loop of the stitch). Place the working loop of yarn back on your hook and draw the loop through the first stitch.

Slip Knot and Starting Chain

Notes:

  • Pattern is written with a ch 4, sl st to form a ring to begin. I prefer to use a double magic ring to begin, as it is more secure. Either is acceptable for this pattern.
  • Sl st to join is worked under both loops of the stitch and pulled tightly (to make it as small as possible).
  • Sl st does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • The first st of each round is worked in the same stitch where we just worked our sl st to join.
  • The ch 1 at the end of every round does not count as a stitch.

Rhondda’s Scrubbie Dishcloth Pattern Instructions

This project is crocheted in joined rounds.

Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 4, sl st to form a ring. Sl st into the ring, ch 1 and work *1 sc, ch 2**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [4 sc, 4 ch2sp]

R2: *1 sc in the BL of the st, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [12 sc, 4 ch2sp]

R3: *1 bo in the unworked FL of the next st in R1, sk the next st in R2 (behind the bo), 1 sc in the BL of the next st, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, 1 sc in the BL of the next st**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [4 bo, 12 sc, 4 ch2sp]

At this point, your square should measure approximately 2 inches X 2 inches.

R4: *1 sc in the BL of the bo, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 sts, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 sts**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [28 sc, 4 ch2sp]

R5: *1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 sc, 1 bo in the unworked FL of the next st in R3, sk the next st in R4 (behind the bo), 1 sc in the BL of the next st, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, 1 sc in the BL of the next st, 1 bo in the unworked FL of the next st in R3, sk the next st in R4 (behind the bo), 1 sc in the BL of the next st**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [8 bo, 24 sc, 4 ch2sp]

R6: *1 sc in the BL of each of the next 5 sts, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 4 sts**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [44 sc, 4 ch2sp]

R7: *1 sc in the BL of each of the next 6 sts, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 5 sts**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [52 sc, 4 ch2sp]

R8: *(1 pc in FL of the st, ch 1, 1 sc in the BL of the next st) 3 times, 1 pc in the FL of the next st, ch 1, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, ch 1, (1 pc in the FL of the next st, ch 1, 1 sc in the BL of the next st) 3 times**.  Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [28 pc, 32 ch1sp, 32 sc, 4 ch2sp]
R9: *Sk the pc, 1 sc in the ch 1, 1 sc in the next st) 3 times. Sk the pc, 1 sc in the ch 1, 1 sc in the next sc, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in the corner ch2sp, 1 sc in the ch 1, (sk the pc, 1 sc in the ch 1, 1 sc in the next st) 3 times**. Rep from * to ** around. Finish off with an invisible join and weave in ends. [72 sc, 4 ch2sp]
