10,000 Crocheted Hats has an interesting flip-book style that lets you explore different hat shapes and stitch ideas. In this review, I go over how it works and what stood out to me.

Inside 10,000 Crocheted Hats (Book Review)
10,000 Crocheted Hats is a fun, interactive flip-style crochet book that lets you design your own hat by choosing the crown, body, and brim sections you like best. You can mix and match 23 different hat designs to create endless combinations. Each pattern is crocheted from the top down and written in UK terms. The techniques and stitches section includes clear written explanations and diagrams to help you understand the stitch patterns you select.
The hats come in three adult sizes:
- Small: 18.5 inches
- Medium: 21 inches
- Large: 23 inches
The patterns are sized as slouchy beanie-style hats, and you can fold the brim for a thicker, double-layer finish if you prefer.
All of the sample hats are worked in DK yarn, and the author uses Stylecraft Special DK throughout the book. You will need about 100 g of DK yarn for most beanie-length designs. Hook sizes vary based on the stitch pattern you choose for each section.
What I Liked
I enjoyed the mix-and-match layout. It feels playful and encourages you to explore different stitch textures and shapes. I also appreciate the 23 complete hat patterns that you can follow exactly as written. These full patterns keep the yarn weight and hook size consistent and make the process more straightforward.
Important Notes
I want to point out a few things that may be helpful before you start:
- No gauges are provided for any of the patterns. You will need to check your own gauge and do a little math so the hat fits in the size you want.
- The patterns share the same stitch and space counts, but switching between sections can be tricky. Some stitch patterns include groups of stitches worked into chain spaces, while other patterns use single stitches only.
- Because of these differences, choosing the right hook size and matching the sections takes some trial and error.
- For these reasons, I feel this book is best suited to intermediate crocheters or above, especially if you plan to mix and match the sections.
Final Thoughts
10,000 Crocheted Hats is a creative and unique book with a fun format and lots of design freedom. If you prefer following a single pattern from start to finish, without any guesswork, I recommend choosing one of the included 23 full hat patterns because they are clearly written and easy to follow. If you like experimenting and customizing your crochet projects, you’ll find it a fun adventure. Just keep in mind that mixing different sections will require you to adjust your gauge and make decisions on what hook size to use as you go.

Crocheters Often Ask
The mix-and-match format can be challenging without a gauge guide, so it’s better suited to intermediate crocheters or anyone comfortable adjusting hook sizes and fit.
Yes. The sample hats use Stylecraft Special DK, but any DK yarn should work as long as you know how to check your gauge, especially when combining sections.
No. You can skip the flip-book section entirely and use the 23 full hat patterns. These are clear and easier to follow since the yarn and hook stay consistent.
Yes. All instructions in the book use UK crochet terminology, including the stitch and technique section.
