Reversible Bulky Ear Warmer

Here’s how it works.

I think it is a goal for many of us (I won’t call it a New Year’s Resolution) is to try to use up some of our stashed yarn.

I make an effort to do this throughout the year; not just in January. Whether I give the yarn to local causes to make blankets, or I use it for giveaways on my blog for my online crochet friends (check out my current giveaways here), I like to see that yarn I have stashed be put to good use, rather than be tossed out.

I especially love hearing about all the afghans and blankets that have been made by kindly volunteers (thank you for helping the yarn get to those who can use it Sue!).

So for those of you who would like to use up some of your stash, here is a quick and easy project that you can whip-up in less than an hour using some of your Bulky Weight Yarn.

The yarn I used is one I love but one that has been discontinued (I think?). It is called Caron Swirl Cakes and the color of my left-over yarn is Gold Fusion. The label on my yarn notes this is a Bulky Weight Yarn [5], 8 oz / 227 g and 252 yds / 230 m. The recommended hook size is 8 mm (L) and the yarn is 70% Acrylic and 30% Wool.

So go check your stash to see if you have popped a cake of Caron Swirl Cakes in there and let’s make some headbands and ear warmers, shall we? I will be releasing 3 free patterns over the next little bit, using a total combined weight of 108 grams of this yarn.

You can see the yarn on Ravelry here and be sure to check out the stashed section because some people are looking to get rid of the Caron Swirl Cakes they have!

Slip Knot and Starting Chain

If you are new to crochet, you can always refer to my How to Crochet Guide and Crochet Stitches and Symbols for more information. For my crochet video tutorials, subscribe to my YouTube Channel here.

Notes:

  • Multiple of 1 (plus 1 for the turning chain) (Understanding Stitch Multiples)
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
  • The turning chain 2 does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • This headband is worked from the top down. Why? the starting chain is always a little bit less stretchy because it is the starting chain – it is perfect for the top of the head and sits comfortably!
  • To add approximately one inch of circumference, increase the starting chain by 2.
  • To increase the height repeat R2 and R3 once each to add approximately 1 inch.

Finishing Instructions for All Earwarmers

Finish off leaving a 8-inch tail of yarn for seaming.

You have 2 options. One you can seam this normally like the one in the photo OR you can make this a twisted headband and close it up like this.

On a flat surface, fold your project in half bringing the side edges together and line up the rows. Thread your yarn end on a yarn needle and work under a loop from each edge and whipstitch (view tutorial here) once for each row.

Once you have finished seaming the earwarmer, weave in any remaining ends securely.
