Difficulty Level

  • EASY-INTERMEDIATE

Finished Size

  • 7.5 inches tall (not including the halo), 4 inches wide when standing and measuring the diameter of the skirt

Gauge

  • Not imperative but if your stitches have spaces between them that you can see through you need to go down a hook size (or two) until you are crocheting a more solid fabric.
  • For her bodice my gauge is 5 sts per inch and 5 rows per inch. For her skirt I have 16 dc in 4 inches (in v-stitch) and 5 rounds in 2 inches.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Notes

  • This project is worked in continuous rounds. You will need to use a stitch marker to keep track of your place.
  • Do not slip stitch to join at the end of rounds unless specified.
  • When a slip stitch is used to join at the end of a round, make the slip stitch tightly.
  • When you work the sc2tog decreases work under the front loop only (it makes the stitch less thick).
  • Ch 1, or ch 2 at the end of the round does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • Do not work into slip stitches unless specified.
  • Extra stitches are at the end of the pattern.

Beautiful Crochet Angel Pattern You Can Make in 90 Minutes

You are beginning at the top of the Angel’s head and working in continuous rounds to the base of the dress, all in one piece.

Using your 4 mm (G) hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in a DMR. [6 sc]

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. [12 sc]

Rnd 3: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]

Rnd 4: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [24 sc]

Rnd 5-Rnd 7: 1 sc in each st around. [24 sc]

Rnd 8: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]

Rnd 9: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [12 sc]

Fill the head with Poly-Fil but do not overstuff.

Rnd 10: Sc2tog around. [6 sc]

Rnd 11: 1 FPsc in each st around. [6 FPsc]

Rnd 12: 2 FPsc in each st around. [12 FPsc]

Rnd 13: 1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [14 sc]

Rnd 14: 1 sc in each st around. [14 sc]

Rnd 15: 1 sc in the first st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [10 sc, 2 ch3sp]

Rnd 16: 1 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [16 sc]

Rnd 17: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [20 sc]

Rnd 18-Rnd 21: 1 sc in each st around. [20 sc]

Rnd 22: 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first st to join (under both loops of the stitch). Ch 2. [20 sc]

Note: The first 2 dc in Rnd 23 are worked into the same sc that you slip stitched to at the end of Rnd 22 but under the back loop of the stitch only.

Rnd 23: 2 dc in the BL of each sc around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 2. [40 dc]

Note: the skirt is a ‘balloon style’ skirt and pops out really far. We have put in a lot of stitches in one round to allow the skirt stitch pattern to be seamless. It might look like you are doing it wrong but don’t worry! The skirt will have a beautiful pouf and natural pleat at the end!

Rnd 24: Sk the first st (the one you sl st to join in). Make 2 dc into the sp bef the next st. *Sk the next 2 sts, make 2 dc into the sp bef the next st**. Work from * to ** around to the last st. Sk the last st. Sl st to the first st to join. [40 dc]

TIP: You will notice that you have  20 sets of 2 dc. You will be making your 2 dc sts in bet the 2 dc in each set for the remainder of the skirt. These sets of 2 dc are v-stitches.

Rnd 25-Rnd 32: Sk the first st. Make 2 dc into the sp bef the next st. *Sk the next 2 sts, make 2 dc into the sp bef the next st**. Work from * to ** around to the last st. Sk the last st. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 1. [40 dc]

Rnd 33: Sk the first st. Make 2 sc into the sp bef the next st. *Sk the next 2 sts, make 2 sc into the sp bef the next st**. Work from * to ** around to the last st. Sk the last st. Sl st to the first st to join. [40 sc]

Rnd 34: 1 sl st in each st around. Finish off and weave in ends. [40 sl st]

Arms

Make 1.

The arm is created in one piece; worked flat in rows and then seamed on the long edges with a slip stitch seam.

R1: Ch 31, beg in 2nd ch from hook and work 1 sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [30 sc]

R2: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [30 sc]

Now we will fold the rectangle in half lengthwise and seam the long edges together using a slip stitch seam (see R3). Line up the stitches so you can work through both the rem loop of the foundation ch and the stitches of R2.

R3: 1 sl st in each st across. Finish off. [30 sl st]

Wings

Make 2.

R1: Ch 14, beg in 2nd ch from hook and work 1 sl st in each ch across, ch 1, turn. [13 sl st]

R2: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 12 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [12 sl st ]

R3: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [12 sl st]

R4: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 11 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [11 sl st ]

R5: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [11 sl st]

R6: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 10 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [10 sl st ]

R7: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [10 sl st]

R8: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 9 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [9 sl st ]

R9: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [9 sl st]

R10: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 8 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [8 sl st ]

R11: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [8 sl st]

R12: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 7 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [7 sl st ]

R13: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [7 sl st]

R14: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 6 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [6 sl st ]

R15: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [6 sl st]

R16: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 5 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [5 sl st ]

R17: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [5 sl st]

R18: 1 sl st in the BL of each of the next 4 sts, sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [4 sl st ]

Now we will create the wing shape. Working in the spaces between the rows and in the base of the first foundation chain (R1), sc10tog.

How to crochet Raquel's Angel Wings (free pattern)

Halo

Created using a 4 mm (G) crochet hook and Gold Bowdabra Bow Wire.

What is Bowdabra Bow Wire? This is a thin piece of wire wrapped in gold metallic thread. I found mine at Michael’s in the ribbon section. It can stand on its own which is why I like it – and it is much thinner than pipe-cleaner (which was what I had been considering).

R1: Ch 20, finish off leaving a short 2-3 inch tail of the bow wire.

  • Now take the tail (at the end of the chain 20) and thread it through the 7th chain you made.
  • This will create the halo loop.
  • Now twist (like a twist-tie) the two remaining ends together to make it straight and stiff.
  • Take that one end (since you twisted them together you have one wire now) and thread it through the back of the angel’s head and down to the base of the neck before cutting off any of the excess wire.
  • If you want to dab a bit of fabric glue in there to keep it in place you can.

Finishing Instructions

  • Weave in any remaining ends securely.
  • Insert the arm through the holes on each side of the dress.
  • Insert the halo through the back stitches of the head.
  • Decorate with glitter, bells or sequins or place a tea light under her skirt (or a bell) and add a hanging tie to make her a Christmas Tree ornament.

Extra Options

  • Easily stitch the hands together to make your angel ‘pray’ or give her something to hold in her hands.
  • Add hair to her head if you’d like!
  • Stitch a bell under her skirt, or add a ribbon to her back (above her wings) to make her an ornament for your tree.
  • Add a handmade paper (or plastic) cone under her skirt to help her stay in shape on the top of your Christmas Tree.

  1. Hi Linda, the slip stitch would be in the top of the ch 2 we made at the beginning of Rnd 22.Then we work in between that stitch we slip stitched to and the next dc to make 2 dc. Hope this makes sense ๐Ÿ™‚ Rhondda

  2. Hi Rhondda , Thank you for the info, when I slip st at the end of row 23 is it the base of the chain 2 at the start of row 23 that I do?

  3. Hi Linda ๐Ÿ™‚ No worries! For the slip stitch to joins for this Angel pattern you will slip stitch to the first stitch of the round.

I should have separated Rnd 22 from Rnd 18-21.

    So it should be:

Rnd 18-Rnd 21: 1 sc in each st around. [20 sc]
Rnd 22: 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 2. [20 sc]

This means slip stitch to the first sc of the round to join (under both loops of the sc), ch 2 and R23 we work 2 dc in the back loop of the first stitch (this means under the back loop of the first single crochet – the same stitch you already have the slip stitch in).

Rnd 23: 2 dc in the BL of each sc around. Sl st to the first st to join. Ch 2. [40 dc]
[40 dc]

I hope this helps! I’m off to update that for everyone! I apologize for the confusion it caused.

    Best wishes, Rhondda

  4. Hello Rhondda

,Just starting row 18 on this pattern. As usual I am having a problem with the slip stitch . I slip to the first stitch and than chain 2. So where do I go for the next stitch? I always seem to have problems with slip stitches for some reason. Any help would be appreciated. I cannot wait to finish this angel. Every one of your angel patterns are beautiful. Thank you very much.

    Linda
