Quick and Easy Crochet Cup Cover
Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (Worsted Weight Cotton) (note: Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn will also work)
Hook: 5.0 mm (H)
Other Supplies: Large Assorted Wood Beads (or any beads of your choice). The beads I used were purchased at Michaels in a bulk package. The largest beads I used are 2 cm in diameter and the smaller bead (for the ‘handle’ 1.5 cm in diameter). My yarn needle fit through the center of the bead easily. If your beads have a smaller hole you can purchase a beading needle which is amazing – I get mine at Michaels too – Beadalon is the brand I use. Here is what they look like in case you are interested: Beadalon Big Eye Needle
Finished Size: 4.5 inches diameter
Abbreviations:
U.S. Crochet Terminology
ch(s) – chain(s)
hdc – half double crochet
R – round
sc – single crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
Pattern:
Note: do not slip stitch to join or chain at the beginning of the continuous rounds to make up height – unless specifically noted
First you need to pick your beads – for this project I use 5 beads. 4 sized 2 cm diameter and 1 sized 1.5 cm diameter. The smaller bead is what I used for my ‘handle’.
Thread your 4 large beads on your yarn first, then the smaller bead you are using for the ‘handle’.
Handle: leave a 4 inch tail of yarn, ch 2, slide the first bead down, ch 2 – proceed to R1 (do not finish off – this is the ‘handle’ bit and at the end you will stitch the yarn into the reverse side of the finished cover – by going through the very center opening)
R1: ch 2 and work 10 hdc in the 2nd ch from your hook (10)
From this point on you will work your hdc in the 3rd loop (aka the back bar) of each st. The 3rd loop can be found by looking at a half double crochet stitch. You will see the front and back loops – now peek just behind the back loop and you will see another loop there just below it – this is the 3rd loop. I will add a photo here for you very soon to make it easier 🙂
R2: 2 hdc in the 3rd loop of each st around (20)
R3: working in the 3rd loop of each st: (2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st) 10 times (30)
R4: working in the 3rd loop of each st: (2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts) 10 times (40)
R5: 1 hdc in the 3rd loop of each st around (40)
R6: (1 sc in the 3rd loop of each of the next 10 sts, ch 2, slide a bead down to your hook, ch 2, sc into the same st as your last sc) 4 times, finish off and weave in ends.
Thread your initial 4 inch tail of yarn onto your yarn needle and weave it into the center hole created by R1. weave in ends securely. Finish off.
Super easy – super quick!
This fits on various sizes of cups and mugs – and it is easy to make larger or smaller.

Thank you Brenda 🙂 This one is super quick to make too which is an added bonus for me! Have a lovely week, Rhondda
Thank you Brenda 🙂 Yes the beads help hold the cover down and stops it from blowing off with the wind.

Congratulations! Your design has been chosen as a Judges’ Nominee for Best Cozy or Cover Design 2015 for The Crochet Awards!
Please let us know if you add this to Ravelry, as we’d love to link to it there.
Yes, the weight of the beads holds the cover on.
Love, love, absolutly love this idea.
Oh I will need to make these! Nothing worse than finding bugs and dirt in your coffee! Thanks for the pattern! 🙂
I love the idea of the cup cover! My husband is always trying to cover his cup during the umber to keep the flies away, Can’t wait to make him one!
Would love to learn how to make all these cute critters
Love these patterns
I have made a lot of these coffecupholders, but this one was more beautiful when combined with The buttons or what you call them in english. I will definitely try to make one like this one. Thanks for The inspiration ??

These are AWESOME! They’ll also make nice & easy Christmas gifts for all of the coffee & soda drinkers on your list. You could either use “Christmassy” colors, or ones to match a sports team, or someone’s favorite color / colors, etc.
Nice and easy pattern… Do the beads serve a purpose or are they just to make the cup cover more pretty? Can v make this without the beads?
Thank you for this pattern. I am going to make a few of these bad boys. Gnats have been really bad in our area this year and not so good to see them in your drink.
