Supplies

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Yarns. Mandala. 5.3 oz (150 g) and 590 yds (540 m). 100% Acrylic. Light Weight Yarn [3]. Machine wash and dry.
  • Color:  1 cake Pegasus.
  • Crochet Hook: 4 mm (G) for the hat band, 5 mm (H) for the hat body.
  • Finished Project: Adult small hat: 1.87 oz (53 g) and  208 yds (190 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)

Finished Hat Sizes

To fit the base of the earlobe. 3 inches negative ease (stretchy hat).

  • Preemie: 9 inches circumference X 4.7 inches height
  • Newborn: 11 inches circumference X 5.3 inches height
  • 0-3 months: 13 inches circumference X 5.9 inches height
  • 3-6 months: 14 inches circumference X 6.5 inches height
  • 6-12 months: 15 inches circumference X 6.5 inches height
  • 12-24 months: 16 inches circumference X 6.9 inches height

Gauge

  • Hat Band: Approximately 5 sc per 1 inch and 18 rows per 4 inches.

Special Stitches

FP+dc2tog

Yarn over, insert hook around the post of the first stitch (from front to back to front), yarn over and pull up 1 hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and insert hook into the next st, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 loops.

FPdc2tog (final round)

Instead of working around the combined post of the FP+dc2tog, we work around the post of the dc portion of the stitch only. We skip the post of the FP portion.

Yarn over, insert hook around the dc post of the first stitch (from front to back to front), yarn over and pull up 1 hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, sk the FPpost of the same stitch, yarn over and insert hook around the dc post of the next stitch (from front to back to front), yarn over and pull up 1 hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. Sk the FPpost of the stitch.

  • Initial ch 3 counts as a stitch.

  • You can make your slip stitches tightly as we will not be working into them.
  • If you’d like to increase the hat height, work more repeat rounds. 
  • The baby sizes have a narrower hat band (1 inch width). Sizes Toddler (12-24 months) and up have a 2 inch hat band.
  • These hats will stretch approximately 3 inches (easily).

The hat band is worked in turned rows.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge) and leaving a 6 inch tail of yarn:

R1: Ch 6, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [5 sc]

R2-R33: 1 sc in the bl of each of the next 4 sts, 1 sc in the last st, ch 1, turn. [5 sc]

Do not finish off, proceed to the Hat Body.

Hat Body

The hat body is worked in joined, turned rounds, directly into the edges of the hat band.

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rotate the hat band to work across the row ends.

Rnd 3: Ch 1. *1 FPdc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [48 dc, 24 FPdc]

Rnd 4-Rnd 15: Rep Rnds 2 and 3

Rnd 16: Ch 1. *1 FPdc in the next st, dc2tog**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [24 dc, 24 FPdc]

Rnd 17: Ch 1. *1 dc in the next st, 1 FPdc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn.  [24 dc, 24 FPdc]

Finishing Instructions for all Sizes:

  • Finish off. Close the top of the hat by weaving your yarn end through the front loops of the last round of stitches and cinching the top closed. See this tutorial for help. 
  • Using the yarn tail you left at the beginning of the hat band, whipstitch the 2 edges of the first row and last row of the hat band together.
  • Weave in ends

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: 8 sc in a DMR. [8]

Rnd 2: *Sl st in the fl of the first st, ch 2, beg in 2nd ch from hook (see photo a & b below) crochet 5 fsc, sl st to the bl of the first st (1 petal made)**. Work from * to ** 7 more times. [8 petals]

For Round 3, you will be working in between the petals from the round before, right into the center of the petal (see photos c & d above).

Fold the petal backwards to make it easier!

Rnd 3: Work the following in between each petal from the previous round: (1 sc, ch2, beginning in the 2nd chain from the hook crochet 3 fsc. 1 sc in the same place you worked the first sc). This will create 8 smaller petals.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing instructions for the flower:
  • Finish off and use the finishing end to sew to the hat
  • Weave in the beginning yarn end.
  • Optional: Pinch the flower together along its center and sew closed on the wrong side (this hides the very center of the flower).
