Welcome! Our July Featured Charity is CLICK for Babies and it is being presented by Carol Rupprecht of Sweet Potato Crochet Creations.

Although this may not be a local Charity to us all, I hope by sharing it with our friends and family, CLICK for Babies will receive the support it needs.  If you are unable to help personally, please share this with your friends online – you never know – you may reach someone who is able to make a difference! If you would like to contribute too, we encourage you to crochet the featured free pattern this month and donate it to CLICK for Babies, or a local charity of your own.

Please read on to learn more about CLICK for Babies and how we can help. ♥ Rhondda

Introduction:

Carol Rupprecht is a wife and stay-at-home mother of 2 children. She first began crocheting when she was pregnant with her first child about 6 years ago. What first started as a simple way to pass the time blossomed into a love for the crochet craft and a way to keep her sanity most days.

Having birthed 2 wonderful children has made her all too familiar with those first difficult months, especially the time of PURPLE crying that all infants go through from 2 weeks to anywhere from 3-4 months.

CLICK for Babies is an exceptional public awareness campaign that desires to create awareness about the Period of PURPLE crying. This program strives to educate parents and other individuals who care for young children about normal infant crying and the dangers of shaking a baby. The goal is to prevent the abuse of infants and Shaken Baby Syndrome.

What does PURPLE stand for?

P– Peak of Crying (Baby may cry more and more each week, with the peak time being around 2 months old.)

U– Unexpected (The crying can oftentimes be unexpected and can come and go.)

R– Resists Soothing (Baby can be fed, changed, cuddled with all needs met, but will still cry. )

P– Pain-like Face (Baby may also make a pain stricken face even if he/she is not in pain at all.)

L– Long Lasting (Crying can last for 5+hours a day)

E– Evening (Baby may cry the most later in the evening and throughout the night)

What are the crafting guidelines for donations?

If interested in donating newborn hats to CLICK for Babies, you must use soft, clean, newly purchased yarn that is machine washable. Yarns like Red Heart Super Saver, although great on the pocket aren’t the best for a newborn’s head. You are more than welcome to use multiple colors for your hats, however, at least 50% of the hat must be in the color purple. Any shade is acceptable. For sizing, they recommend the hat height to be around 6 inches and for the circumference to be between 13 and 15 inches to fit the average newborn head. Because these hats are delivered to hospitals in November and December, it is not advised for crocheters and knitters to use patterns that have large openings or holes. Please use a pattern with a more solid stitch to keep the baby’s head warm during these winter months. Also, it is necessary to avoid adding additional on pieces such as buttons, tassels, or pom poms as they may be a choking hazard.

DEADLINE: September 30th 2018.

Many states do not have a specific drop off location or address. Please ship your donations to the National Center of Shaken Baby Syndrome. From there, they will make sure that your donated hats are brought to babies all over North America.

Address: National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome | Period of PURPLE Crying

1433 North 1075 West, Suite #110, Farmington, UT 84025

Don’t crochet or knit? That’s ok! There are many ways that you are able to get involved and support this great cause!

-Spread the word!

-Provide a crafter with soft purple yarn that they are able to use to make hats to donate.

-Donate money.

-Volunteer. Visit the “Get Involved with a Campaign Near You” section on the CLICK for Babies homepage to find out more info on how and where you can volunteer.
