Let’s Learn A New Crochet Stitch!

This week I have an easy peasy one to share – with a small twist!

I thought we could practise:

  • changing colours
  • working in front loops only
  • invisible joining technique

This is how you work in the front loop (remember the front loop is always the loop closest to you -it is based on the work’s position relative to you!):

Front Loop Sc

fl sc

ridge created by fl only

So one side has the ridge –

back

and one side doesn’t.

Ready to give it a try?

Yarn: Red Heart With Love in three colours (or you can do this entirely in one colour if you wish)

Hook: 6.50 mm(K)

Abbreviations: R – row, sc – single crochet, fl sc – front loop single crochet stitch, ch – chain, st – stitch, sts – stitches

Finished Size: 8″ x 8″

I have two options for you – one option for anyone who does not want to change colours (Single Colour) and a second option for anyone who would like to change colours (Three Colours)

Single Colour (for those who do not want to make the colour changes!):

R1: Chain 23, beginning in the 2nd ch from your hook, 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn [22]

R2: 1 fl sc in each st across, ch 1 turn [22]

R3: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn [22]

Repeat R2 and R3 until your square measures approximately 7.5″ then proceed to the edging

Three Colours:

Colour Change sc stitch: insert hook into the next st, yarn over hook, pull up 1 loop. Now drop the colour of yarn you are working with and pick up the new colour of yarn: yarn over the hook, and pull through the 2 loops on your hook

You always change your colour on the last yarn over of the stitch you are completing – unless a pattern indicates otherwise.

For the first colour changes for R2 and R3 where you are adding a new colour yarn to the project, leave about an 8 inch tail and then holding the tail securely in hand, place the new colour of yarn over the hook (just like a yarn over) to complete the Colour Change sc as indicated above. You will weave in the ends later so this is enough to secure your stitch until you are finished 🙂

In Colour A:

R1: Chain 23, beginning in the 2nd ch from your hook, 1 sc in each st across (*note: in the last sc of the row see “Colour Change sc stitch” above), ch 1, turn [22]

Colour B:

R2: 1 fl sc in each st across (*note: in the last sc of the row see “Colour Change sc stitch” above), ch 1 turn [22]
