Ombre Brimmed Hat in Any Size

Supplies

  • Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Ombre. 10 oz (283 g) and 482 yds (440 m). 100% Acrylic. Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash and dry.
  • Color: 1 skein Baja Blue (Shade E305.3963)
  • Crochet Hook: 5.5 mm (I) and 5 mm (H)
  • Finished Project: Hat: 2.6 oz (74 g) and 126 yds (115 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)

Difficulty Level

  • Easy-Intermediate

Finished Sizes

Hat heights before adding the brim.

  • Preemie: Approximately 10″ circumference and 3.25″ height.
  • Newborn: Approximately 12″ circumference and 4.2″ height.
  • 3-6 months: Approximately 15″ circumference and 4.6″ height.
  • 6-12 months: Approximately 16″ circumference and 5.5″ height.
  • 12-24 months: Approximately 17″ circumference and 6″ height.
  • 3-5 years: Approximately 18″ circumference and 6″ height.
  • 6-10 years: Approximately 19″ circumference and 7″ height.
  • Teen: Approximately 20″ circumference and 7″ height.
  • Adult medium: Approximately 21″ circumference and 7.4″ height.
  • Adult large: Approximately 22″ circumference and 7.4″ height.

Gauge

  • approximately 12 sts per 4 inches and 9 rows in 4 inches

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size of your project will also be different.

Notes

  • Stitch multiple of 2.
  • this project is worked in joined rounds.
  • Initial ch 3 does NOT count as 1 dc.
  • Sl st to join: make a slip stitch to join in the first stitch of the round (for rounds with a ch 3 this means the dc following the ch 3).
  • Do not count the ch 1 at the beginning of a round as a stitch.
  • the first st of each round is worked in the same st as you made your sl st to join.
  • to increase the hat height work more repeat rounds.
  • If you’d prefer a hat without the brim, follow the pattern as written and work 1 round of single crochet stitches to edge your finished hat.

Ombre Brimmed Hat Crochet Pattern

This hat is crocheted from the crown to the brim in joined rounds, in one piece. The brimmed section is added directly to the hat.

Preemie Ombre Brimmed Hat

To fit 12″ head size.

Main Hat

Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 3, 12 dc, sl st to join. [12 dc]

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around; sl st to join. [24 dc]

Rnd 3: Ch 3, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts**. Rep from * to ** 6 times. Sl st to join. Turn. [30 dc]

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *1 sl st in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around.  Sl st to join. Turn. [15 dc, 15 sl st]

Rnd 5: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st around. Sl st to join. Turn. [30 dc]

Rnd 6 – Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 4 and Rnd 5. 

Finish off. Proceed to the Hat Brim section below.

Hat Brim

With RS facing, rejoin yarn 7 stitches after the last st worked. 

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

R1: RS: 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in each of the next 10 sts, 1 sc in the next st, sk all rem sts. Ch 1, turn. [22 sc]

R2: Working in the back loop of each stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 22 sts, 1 hdc in the next unworked st from the main hat, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the main hat. Ch 1, turn. [23 sc, 1 hdc]

R3: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 24 sts, 1 hdc in the next unworked st from the main hat, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the main hat. [25 sc, 1 hdc] 

Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Now continue working around the hat making 1 sc in each st of the hat, until you reach the base of the hat brim. [14 sc]

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Make 1 sl st in each stitch in the hat brim back to the main hat. [26 sl st]

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Newborn Ombre Brimmed Hat

To fit 14″ head size.

Main Hat

Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 3, 12 dc, sl st to join. [12 dc]

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around; sl st to join. [24 dc]

Rnd 3: Ch 3, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [36 dc]

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *1 sl st in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around.  Sl st to join. Turn. [18 dc, 18 sl st]

Rnd 5: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st around. Sl st to join. Turn. [36 dc]

Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Now continue working around the hat making 1 sc in each st of the hat, until you reach the base of the hat brim. [18 sc]

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Make 1 sl st in each stitch in the hat brim back to the main hat. [30 sl st]

3-6 months Ombre Brimmed Hat

To fit 17″ head size.

Main Hat

Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 3, 12 dc, sl st to join. [12 dc]

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around; sl st to join. [24 dc]

Rnd 5: Ch 3, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [60 dc]

Rnd 6: Ch 3, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 14 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join. Turn. [64 dc]

Rnd 7: Ch 1, *1 sl st in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around.  Sl st to join. Turn. [32 dc, 32 sl st]

Rnd 8: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st around. Sl st to join. Turn. [64 dc]

Hat Brim

With RS facing, rejoin yarn 16 stitches after the last st worked. 

Using your 5 mm (H) crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

R1: RS: 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in each of the next 21 sts, 1 sc in the next st, sk all rem sts. Ch 1, turn. [44 sc]

R2: Working in the back loop of each stitch, 1 sc in each of the next 44 sts, 1 hdc in the next unworked st from the main hat, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the main hat. Ch 1, turn. [45 sc, 1 hdc]

R3: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 46 sts, 1 hdc in the next unworked st from the main hat, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the main hat. [47 sc, 1 hdc] 

R4: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 48 sts, 1 hdc in the next unworked st from the main hat, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the main hat. [49 sc, 1 hdc] 

R5: Sk the sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 50 sts, 1 hdc in the next unworked st from the main hat, 1 sc and 1 sl st in the next unworked st from the main hat. [51 sc, 1 hdc]
