Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan Review

The Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan features four adorable little bears snuggled up under a quilt. Their little hands are holding onto the top-edge of the quilt that they have been covered with and they are fast asleep.

The afghan features a pocket border, where you make 2 sides and envelope the fringe inside the “pocket” and single crochet the two sides closed. Carol has also provided instructions to explain how you can convert this into a fringe border if you prefer.

This brand-new quilt-style crochet afghan is available in 2 different sizes. The Baby Size Afghan measures approximately 42.75 inches X 43 inches. The Child Size Afghan measures 48.75 inches X 49 inches. A note has been included to help you make the blanket longer if you wish.

Page 2 of the pattern includes the abbreviations used in the pattern and important information about how the stitches will be worked. There is also a helpful video if you are a visual learner.

Instructions include a written pattern (US Crochet Terms) plus an optional graph for those who prefer to work from that.

Yarn and Hook

The Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan is crocheted with medium weight yarn [4]. The Baby Size Afghan is crocheted with a 4 mm (G) hook and the border base only is worked with a 5 mm (H) hook.

The Child Size Afghan is crocheted with a 5.5 mm (I) hook and the border base only is worked with a 6 mm (J) hook.

Easy to Learn Crochet Technique

This adorable afghan is much easier to crochet than you would think and with Carol’s helpful step-by-step video tutorial you will be able to master the technique easily.
The Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan is crocheted with an easy-to-learn method where you work with only one color of yarn at a time, using a dropped double crochet stitch technique. The effect is similar to Mosaic Knitting but it’s crochet! This is the same technique that was used years ago when making the Navajo Afghans (Trail of Tears Afghans) that were so very popular.
Instead of trying to juggle more than one color of yarn at a time for each row you work, this technique allows you to crochet your stitches into the remaining front loop of a stitch 2 rows prior and add a different color simply!
All the color changes take place at the beginning of the rows so this means you are only working with a single color of yarn at a time.
Only simple stitches are used to make this afghan, so I feel a determined beginner would be able to master the pattern. You will only need to understand where to find the front loops and back loops of your stitches, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitches.  I love how easy this technique makes it to crochet mosaic designs.

The Nite Nite Teddy Bear Afghan ePattern is available for purchase from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs. The current price (which is subject to change) at the time of this post being written is $7.95 USD.
