NOTES FROM DESIGNER

This is a free excerpt pattern from Shady Lane’s booklet “Slumber Party,” which was designed to fit the popular 18″ dolls such as American Girl, Springfield and others. Because these dolls can vary a bit in size, it is a good idea to try the outfit on as you crochet to adjust for any slight differences between dolls. I’ve designed these outfits to fit the most popular 18″ doll, but have noticed that the size can vary in other 18″ dolls. If your garments are not fitting, try using a size larger/smaller hook to slightly change the size, or add a few rnds of sc to sole or increase/decrease in upper sock to ensure a better fit for the particular doll you are crocheting for.

Gauge

• With F hook and Baby/Sport/DK Yarn: 5 sc and 6 sc rnds/rows = 1 inch

Abbreviations Used

beg = beginning
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
lp(s) = loop(s)
rnd(s) = round(s)
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
tog = together
tr = treble
yo = yarn over

Special Stitches and Techniques

Sc (first, next, last) 2 sts tog: insert hook in first st, yo, pull through st, insert hook in 2nd st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through all lps on hook. Sc (first, next, last) 3 sts (or chs) tog: insert hook in first st, yo, pull through st, insert hook in 2nd st, yo, pull through st, insert hook in 3rd st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Hdc (first, next, last) 2 sts tog: Yo, insert hook in first st, yo, pull through st, yo, insert hook in 2nd st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through all lps on hook.

Color Changes—Change to new color in last step of last st of old color. Hook new color and draw through loops of old color still on hook; drop old color to be picked up as needed.

Materials

• Three medium snaps
• Baby, Sport or DK yarn: 1.5 oz. black and 1.5 oz. turquoise
• 3.75 mm (F) crochet hook

Note

• Carry unused color along side of work and pick up as needed.

BOTTOM SECTION (SKIRT)

Row 1: Beginning at underarm, with turquoise, ch 61, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (60) This row is right side of garment.

Row 2: Sc in each st across changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise (to be picked up in a later row), ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Continuing with black, hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Sc in each st across changing to turquoise in last step of last st, drop black (to be picked up later), ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Continuing with turquoise, hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Row 6: Sc in each st across changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise, ch 1, turn.

Rows 7-13: Repeat Rows 3-6 consecutively ending with Row 5.

Row 14: Sc in first 13 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 32 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last 13 sts changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise, ch 1, turn. (62)

Rows 15-17: Repeat Rows 3-5

Row 18: Sc in first 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 50 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last 5 sts changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise, ch 1, turn. (64)

Rows 19-25: Repeat Rows 3-6 ending with Row 5.

Row 26: Sc in each st across. Fasten off leaving long lengths of both colors for sewing sides tog.

FINISHING

• Sew first and last sts of piece tog from Row 26 up through Row 12, matching colors for best results.
• You will now have a circular piece.

BOTTOM FRONT

Row 27: Right side facing, join black with sl st in 21st st of Row 26, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 30 sts, skip remaining sts, ch 1, turn. (31)

Row 28: Sc in each st across changing to turquoise in last step of last st, drop black, ch 1, turn.

Row 29: Continuing with turquoise, hdc ineachst across, ch 1, turn.

Row 30: Sc first 2 sts tog, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc last 2 sts tog changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise, ch 1, turn. (29)

Row 31: Continuing with black, hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Row 32: Sc in each st across changing to turquoise in last step of last st, drop black, ch 1, turn.

Row 34: Sc in first st, sc next 2 sts tog, sc in next 23 sts, sc next 2 sts tog, sc in last st changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise, ch 1, turn. (27)

Row 36: Skip sl st, sc in next 23 sts, sl st in last st. Fasten off. (23 sc)

TOP SECTION (BODICE)

BOTTOM BACK

Row 27: Skip next unworked st of Row 26 (counting from last st of Row 27 of Bottom Front), join black with sl st in next st, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 30 sts, skip remaining sts, ch 1, turn. (31)

Rows 28-36: Repeat Rows 28-36 of Bottom Front.

BOTTOM EDGING

• Join turquoise with sc in any st of Row 36 at back, sc in each st across, sc down side in ends of rows, sc in unworked skipped st of Row 26, sc up side in ends of rows, sc in each st of Row 36 of Bottom Front, sc in each end of row down side, sc in unworked skipped st of Row 26, sc up side in ends of rows, sc in each st across to first st of this rnd, join with sl st.
• Fasten off.

LEFT BACK

Row 1: Right side facing, hold piece with Row 1 of Bottom Section at top, join black with sl st in first remaining ch-lp of Row 1 of Bottom Section to your right, hdc in same lp, hdc in next lp, hdc next 2 lps tog, (hdc in each of next 2 lps, hdc next 2 lps tog) twice, hdc next 2 lps tog, skip remaining lps, ch 1, turn. (10)

Row 2: Sc in each st across changing to turquoise in last step of last st, drop black (to be picked up in a later row), ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Continuing with turquoise, hdc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Sc in each st across changing to black in last step of last st, drop turquoise, ch 1, turn.

Rows 8-10: Repeat Rows 8-10 of Left Front.

RIGHT BACK

Row 1: Right side facing, for underarm, skip next 5 remaining ch-lps of Row 1 (counting right to left from last st of Row 1 of Front), join black with sl st in next lp, ch 2 (does not count as a st), work hdc decrease as follows: yo, insert hook in same lp as joining, yo, pull yarn through lp, insert hook in next lp, yo, pull through lp, yo, pull through all lps on hook, hdc next 2 lps tog, (hdc in each of next 2 lps, hdc next 2 lps tog) twice, hdc in each of last 2 lps, ch 1, turn. Rows 2-8: Repeat Rows 2-8 of Left Back.

FINISHING

• Sew shoulder seams.

PLACKET AND NECK EDGING

• Join turquoise with sc in end of Row 11 of Bottom Section Skirt on Left Back, matching colors in everything except front neckline, sc in end of each row up back, across neckline and around to last st of Right Back, sc in each end of row down back to opposite end of Row 11, with 2 sc in corners as needed.
• Fasten off.

SLEEVE (MAKE 2)

Rnd 1: Rightside facing, join black with sc in 3rd skipped ch-lp at underarm, sc in each of next 2 remaining lps, sc in same st as next sc of Row 1 of Bodice, sc in side of same st, sc in end of each row around, sc in same st as sc of Row 1 of Bodice, sc in last 2 remaining skipped ch-lps of Row 1 of Bodice, join. (27)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join, drop black (to be picked up later).

Rnd 3: Join turquoise with sl st in first st, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1, turn.

Rnd 4: Sc in each of first 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog, (sc in each of next 2 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) 5 times, sc in each of last 3 sts, join, drop turquoise (to be picked up later). (21)

Rnd 5: TURN, pick up black and ch 2 or so to get up to right height, hdc in first st, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1, turn.

Rnd 6: Continuing with black, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off black.

Rnd 7: TURN, pick up turquoise and ch 2 or so to get up to right height, hdc in first st, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1, turn.

Rnd 8: Sc in each st around, join.

Rnd 9: TURN, sl st in each st around, join in first sl st. Fasten off.

• Sew 3 snaps evenly spaced on back opening.

SOCK (MAKE 2)

Rnd 1: Starting at toe, with turquoise, ch 5, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 2 chs, 5 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of ch in remaining ch-lps, sc in each of next 2 lps, 3 sc in last lp, join with sl st in first sc. (14)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, 3 sc in last st, join. (18)

Rnds 3-4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. Fasten off at end of Rnd 4.

Rnd 5: Join black with sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 10 sts, hdc in last st, join.

Rnds 6-9: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 10 sts, hdc in last st, join. At end of Rnd 9, ch 1 and pull up a lp to secure and drop black but do not fasten off as it will be picked up later after short rows are worked.

SHORT ROWS

(Short Row) Row 10: For heel, join turquoise with sc in 7th st (mark this st), hdc in next 10 sts, sc in next st (mark this st), skip remaining sts, ch 1, turn. (12) Begin working in rows.

(Short Row) Row 11: Sc first 2 sts tog, sc in next 8 sts, sc last 2 sts tog, ch 1, turn. (10)

(Short Row) Row 12: Sc first 2 sts tog, hdc in next 6 sts, sc last 2 sts tog, ch 1, turn. (8)

(Short Row) Row 13: Sc first 2 sts tog, (sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog) twice, ch 1, turn. (5)

(Short Row) Row 14: Sc first 2 sts tog, sc in next st, sc last 2 sts tog. (3) Fasten off.

SHORT ROW EDGING

(Short Row Edging) Row 15: Join turquoise with sl st in same st you joined Row 10, sc in each end of row up side of turquoise heel, sc in each of 3 sts of Row 14, sc in end of each 5 rows down side, join with sl st in same st you worked last st of Row 10. (13 sc) Fasten off.

Rnd 16: Pick up black, sc in first 6 unworked sts of Rnd 9, sc in same st you worked marked st, working around short rows, sc in each sc of Edging, sc in same st you worked other marked st, join in first sc of this rnd. (21) Begin working in rnds.

Rnds 17-18: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sts, hdc in last 15 sts, join.

Rnd 19: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sc in joining sl st of previous rnd, join. (22) Fasten off.

RIBBING

Row 1: Join turquoise with sl st in 15th st of Rnd 19, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs, sl st in each of next 2 sts of Rnd 19, ch 1, turn. (4 sc) Begin working in rows.

Row 2: Skip sl sts, sc in back lp of each sc across, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
