Super Clean Super Foods
I’m very excited to share this new book with you today! I have to admit I rarely make “New Year’s Resolutions” anymore because historically I have failed to reach my enthusiastic goals of weight loss and going to the gym.
This being said, I have decided to be more active and to eat smarter by adding ingredients which will be beneficial to my health, to my daily meals – rather than just trying to eliminate all the yummy goodness I can find at the bakery this year. I am trying for a better balance – in all aspects of my life.
But where to begin? The being more active bit – my goal is just to get walking – I’ve got covered. The eating smarter bit – is where this book is coming in handy!
Super Clean Super Foods
Just released this month, Super Clean Super Foods is filled with ideas to help me add 90 nutritious foods to my meals (more than 250 different ways!). Now some of them I will not be trying – I can tell you this straight out – sardines – in any form are an absolute “no-no” for this enthusiastic eater. I will continue to get my omega-3 fatty acids in other ways – thank you very much! but the other ideas I am much more receptive to – and because the book actually tells me how superfoods will help benefit my body and mind, I actually want to add them to my meals (except sardines!).
What is a Superfood?
Super Clean Super Foods begins by explaining what a superfood is:
“There are foods that are so packed with nutrients that they deserve to be called “super,” and you’re missing out if you don’t include them in your diet. These foods are packed with health-boosting vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals”.
Benefits of Eating
Then it explains the benefits of eating Superfoods in an easy to reference “at-a-glance” guide (which you can cross-reference when we get to the Super Foods sections later in the book):
- Good Sleep
- Brain Power
- Disease Prevention
- Energy Balance
- Blood Health
- Heart Health
- Digestive Health
- Immune Boost
- Hormone Balance
- Bone, Joint, and Muscle Strength
- Eye Health
- Anti-Aging
- Skin Health
What is Eating Clean?
Next we are introduced to the idea of eating clean – which means:
“Clean eating is simple: it means eating foods that are unprocessed or minimally processed. There’s no need to eat only raw foods, or cut particular food groups out of your diet – just embrace the whole range of superfoods available.”
5 Food Groups
It is recommended we build our diet from nutritious foods from 5 groups (aha! remember the 5 food groups from school? well these are the ‘new’ and ‘improved’ versions):
- Fruit and Vegetables
- Starchy Carbohydrates
- Calcium-Rich Foods
- Healthy Proteins
- Healthy Fats
Key Nutrients
The Key Nutrients: Vitamins and Minerals and Phytochemicals are explained next – and phytochemicals are super important. They are chemicals found in the plants we eat that may help prevent things like cell damage, bad cholesterol and some types of cancers.
After taking us through the basics we get to explore the Superfoods in the following categories:
- Grains
- Nuts & Seeds
- Fish, Meat, Dairy & Eggs
- Vegetables
- Fruit
- Herbs, Spices, & Powders
Each section includes tons of information about the superfoods and even recipes and ideas on how you can add each of the foods to your meals.
Other sections to explore are:
- Eating for Gut Health (p 28-29)
- Eating for Sleep (p 52-53)
- Eating for Brain Health (p 76-77)
- Eating for Immunity (p 102-103)
- Eating for Skin Health (p 150-151)
- Eating for Energy (p 202-203)
Nutrient Know How
The Nutrition Know-How Section begins on page 212 and includes the recommended quantities (serving sizes) for women and men for macronutrients (i.e. calories/fiber/fat/salt/protein) and micronutrients (vitamins/minerals). There are a similar set of charts for each of the superfoods – to let you know the recommended serving sizes you need to ingest to take advantage of the key nutrients they offer.
The book itself is beautifully made; a hardback book with thick matte pages. The images are full of color and the fonts are clean and easy to read. The information is presented in clearly divided sections so you can find what you need easily.
Super Clean Super Foods is a fantastic resource. It outlines the benefits of superfoods and how to easily add them to our meals. I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes included and to adding some of the easy superfoods (like brazil nuts) to my pantry as quick snacks. Sometimes just a small change can really make a big difference in our lives and I believe by adding some of these key superfoods I will be able to make a difference in my own health and that of my family.
