New Baby Girl Hats Pattern Review

Carol used her popular mosaic dropped double crochet technique to create these sweet crocheted baby hats.

5 Sweet New Baby Girl Hats

  • Bunny Rabbit
  • Butterfly
  • Flower Bud
  • Hearts
  • Lady Bug.

Page 2 of the pattern includes important information about how the stitches will be worked for the pattern section of the hat. There is a helpful video too if you are a visual learner. You will also find the abbreviations used and gauge information included on page 2.

The hats are available in 2 sizes and information has been included to assist with changing the hat height for those who prefer more slouchy hat styles (on page 2). All of the hats are worked in joined rounds from the bottom up to the top, except for Butterfly, which is worked from the top-down.

The patterns include the following sizes:

2 weeks – 3 months

14 inch head circumference

3 to 6 months

15 inch head circumference

The instructions are written out in full in U.S. Crochet Terms. Optional graphs have been included for the pattern section of each hat.

Yarn and Hook

The yarn and hook used for the hats varies depending on the style and size hat you are making.

Hearts, Ladybug, Butterfly and Bunny Rabbit Hats

The 2 weeks – 3 months hats are worked with Baby, DK (or sport weight) yarn and a 3.50 mm (E) crochet hook. The 3 to 6 months size hats are worked with Baby, DK (or sport weight) yarn and a 3.75 mm (F) hook.

Flower Bud Hat

For the 2 weeks – 3 months size you will need Baby or Fingering Yarn and a size 3.25 mm (D) hook. For the 3 to 6 months size you will need Baby, DK weight or sport weight yarn and a 3.50 mm (E) hook.

Easy to Learn Crochet Technique

These beautiful designs are much easier to crochet than you would think and with Carol’s helpful step-by-step video tutorial you will be able to master the technique easily.
.
The New Baby Girl Hats patterns are crocheted with an easy-to-learn method where you work only one color at a time, using a dropped double crochet stitch technique. The effect is similar to Mosaic Knitting but it’s crochet!
.
Instead of trying to juggle more than one color of yarn at a time for each row you work, this technique allows you to crochet your stitches into the remaining front loop of a stitch 2 rows prior and add a different color simply!
.
All the color changes take place at the beginning of the rounds so this means you are only working with a single color of yarn at a time. The unused yarn is carried up at the back seam of the hat and picked up when needed – this means even fewer ends to sew in!
.
Only simple stitches are used to make these hats, so I feel a determined beginner would be able to make these projects. You will only need to understand where to find the front loops and back loops of your stitches, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitches.  I love how easy this technique makes it to crochet mosaic designs.
.
