Free Beginner Friendly Crochet Ear Warmer Headband Pattern

Crocheted ear warmer headbands are a fun and fashionable way to keep your ears warm without hiding your hair.
The Morgan Ear Warmer pattern is super easy to crochet and works up quickly! You can make a couple headbands in only an hour or two. The three headbands pictured took me about 2 hours in total (while I was watching Netflix) to crochet. You won’t need to get this pattern on Etsy either, as it is available for free, in 3 sizes, in my post below.

Crochet ear warmers are great for keeping your ears toasty during the cold winter months while still allowing you to wear your hair up in a messy-bun, or in a ponytail. Plus, because they are made from crocheted fabric, they can be tucked easily into a pocket, or your purse.
I remember wearing earmuffs when I was younger and I also remember getting my hair caught in the adjustable sliding plastic headband piece when I was wearing them, or trying to remove them. Earmuffs did not provide much coverage from the cold weather.
With this soft, comfortable, crocheted ear-warmer, you won’t need to worry about your long hair getting caught and pulled. Along with protecting your ears from the cold air and wind, the Morgan Ear Warmer will keep your forehead and the back of your head warmer too.
The stitch pattern I used is gender neutral, making this headband suitable for everyone. The Morgan Ear Warmer is crocheted with simple sc and dc stitches.
Morgan Ear Warmer Headband Crochet Pattern
Supplies
- Yarn: Furls Wander Acrylic Yarn. (affiliate link) 3.5 oz (100 g) and 120 yds (109 m).100% Acrylic. Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash cold water, normal cycle. Do not tumble dry. Do not bleach. Low iron.
- Colors: 1 skein each in Amethyst, Cobblestone and Peninsula
- Hook: 5 mm (H) Furls Streamline Swirl Galaxy Solar Flare (affiliate link)
- Finished Project: Child: 1.54 oz (44 g) and 53 yds (48 m) Teen: 1.57 oz (45 g) and 54 yds (49 m) Adult: 1.82 oz (52 g) and 62 yds (57 m)
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker

Finished Size
These ear warmers will stretch 2 to 3 inches in circumference.
- Child Ear Warmer Headband (age 6-10 years) height 4 inches X 18 inches circumference
- Teen Ear Warmer Headband height 4 inches X 19 inches circumference
- Adult Ear Warmer Headband (Medium) height 4.75 inches X 20 inches circumference
To make a small child (age 3-5 years) headband follow the Child Ear Warmer instructions and stop after R46. To make the toddler size (12-24 months), chain 13 and follow the Child Ear Warmer instructions and stop after R44.
Gauge
- Approximately 9 sts per 3 inches and 8 rows worked in pattern per 3 inches
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

- You may customize the earwarmer circumference by working the repeat as many, or as few, times as you wish. Every 2 rows you add with the stitch pattern, will add approximately 0.75-inch of circumference to the headband.
- To increase the width of the headband, add 2 extra chain stitches for every 0.75 inches of width.

Morgan Child Ear Warmer Headband (Age 6-10 years)
Using your 5 mm (H) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 15, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in the next ch. *(1 sc, 1 dc) in the next ch, sk the next ch**. Work from * to ** across to the last ch. 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [8 sc, 6 dc]
R2-R48: 1 sc in the first sc. *(1 sc, 1 dc) in the next dc, sk the next sc**. Work from * to ** across to the last sc. 1 sc in the last sc, ch 1, turn. [8 sc, 6 dc]

Morgan Teen Ear Warmer Headband
Using your 5 mm (H) hook (or size required for gauge):

Morgan Adult Ear Warmer Headband
Using your 5 mm (H) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 17, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in the next ch. *(1 sc, 1 dc) in the next ch, sk the next ch**. Work from * to ** across to the last ch. 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [9 sc, 7 dc]
R2-R52: 1 sc in the first sc. *(1 sc, 1 dc) in the next dc, sk the next sc**. Work from * to ** across to the last sc. 1 sc in the last sc, ch 1, turn. [9 sc, 7 dc]
Proceed to finishing instructions.
Finishing Instructions
- Finish off your yarn leaving approximately a 9 inch tail for seaming.
- Fold your finished band in half widthwise, bringing the foundation row edge (R1) and the final row edge R48 (R50, R52) together.
- Thread your yarn-end on a yarn needle and whipstitch to the 2 edges together neatly.
- Weave in your ends securely.

Wi e to do a repeat from a row before this is because you stated from Row 2 to 59. No where do you Indicate-we will repeat row 1. I m really frustrated.

Finished Size

2 rows = 0.75 inches
So we stop 2 rows sooner for Small Child that will make 17.25 inches and for Toddler it will be an additional 2 rows sooner so about 16.5 inches. The toddler size is narrower too with less chains to start so it is about 3.25 inches wide.
I had to do the math sorry this is so long !
