The Yarn

For this month’s Dishcloth of the Month Club project I used approximately 82 yards (75 meters) of Paintbox Yarns, Cotton Aran yarn. This yarn is 100% cotton. Each 50 g ball contains approximately 93 yards (85 meters).

This pretty cotton yarn creates durable dishcloths that hold up beautifully to countless cleaning tasks!

The dishcloth crochet pattern below is written to make a 8 X 8 inch project, but you can make your project to any size you wish with the stitch multiple I have included in the pattern.

Make it Quick Dishcloth – just 82 yds of yarn, a 4 mm hook, and simple stitches! Free crochet pattern. Great for gifts. #crochet #freepattern

Supplies

  • Yarn: Paintbox Yarns, Cotton Aran. 1.7 oz (50 g) and 93 yds (85 m). 100% Cotton. Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash, do not tumble dry, medium iron, do not bleach; dry cleanable.
  • Color: 1 ball Pansy Purple (Color: 648)
  • Crochet Hook: 4 mm (G) 
  • Finished Project: Dishcloth: 1.49 oz (44 g) and 82 yds (75 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)

Difficulty Level

  • Easy

Finished Sizes

  • Dishcloth width approximately 8 inches X 8 inches length.

Gauge

  • Approximately 17 dc per 4 inches and 9 rows per 4 inches, worked in pattern.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

  • [] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
  • () – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: 6+7
  • Initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Initial ch 3 counts as 1 dc. 
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. Feel free to work in the back loop instead if you prefer.
  • To make this dishcloth longer, work more repeat rows.
  • To make this dishcloth wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.

How to Crochet the Make it Quick Dishcloth

This project is crocheted widthwise in rows.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 31, sk the first 3 chs (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each rem ch across. Turn. [29 dc]

R2: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st, 1 FPsc in each of the next 3 sts. *1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 1 FPsc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** across to the last st. 1 sc in the last st. [2 sc, 15 dc, 12 FPdc]

R3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc each st across. Turn. [29 dc]

R4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). *1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 FPsc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** across to the last 4 sts. 1 dc in each of the last 4 sts. Turn. [17 dc, 12 FPsc]

R5: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). 1 dc in each st across. Turn. [29 dc]

R6-R17: Rep R2 to R5

R18: Rep R2.

Do not finish off.

Proceed to edging instructions.

Edging for the Make it Quick Dishcloth

The edging is worked in rounds around the outside of the dishcloth.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 4, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in the BL of each ch across back to the dishcloth edge, sl st 2 times along the side edge of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R2: Sk the 2 sl sts, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R3: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st 2 times along the side edge of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R4-R29: Rep R2 and R3 across the side edge of the dishcloth. 

In the corner st work:

R30: Sk the 2 sl sts, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R31: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R32: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R33: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R34: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

Working along the bottom of the dishcloth (foundation):

R35: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st in the next 2 sts, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R36: Sk the 2 sl sts, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R37-R62: Rep R35 and R36 across the bottom of the dishcloth.

In the corner st work:

R63: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R64: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R65: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R66: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R70: Sk the 2 sl sts, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R108:  Sk the 2 sl sts, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

In the corner st work:

R135: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R136: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R137: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R138: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R140: Sk the sl st, work back across the edging section, making 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 2 chs, 1 sc in the last ch, ch 1, turn. [3 sc]

R141: 1 sc in the BL of each st across, sl st into the corner of the dishcloth. [3 sc]

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions:

  • Finish off leaving a 6-inch yarn tail.
  • Whipstitch R1 and R141 of the edging together.
  • Weave in ends.
