Magic Menhirs Afghan Square Pattern

- Yarn: Red Heart. With Love Yarn. 7 oz (198 g) and 370 yds (338 m). 100% Acrylic. Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash warm, gentle cycle. Tumble dry low. Do not over dry. Do not bleach. Do not iron.
- Colors: 1 skein each in Boysenberry, E400_1907, Eggshell, E400_1101 and Aubergine, E400_1542.
- Hook: 6 mm (J). I used this hook.
- Finished Project Yardage: 68 g / 128 yds
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.
Abbreviations
US Terminology used
Ch – chain
Ch1sp – chain-1 space (or any number of spaces, as given)
Dc – double crochet
Dc-sp – space between skipped and next dc
Esc – extended single crochet
FPdc – front post double crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
R – round
Rep – repeat

Sk – skip
Sl st – slip stitch
Sp – space
St – stitch
* to **– repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain of multiple instructions.

Special Stitches
5 single crochet popcorn (5-sc pc): 5 sc in indicated st or sp, remove hook from loop, insert hook from front to back in top of first sc of group, insert hook into loop and pull through both loops.
4 single crochet popcorn (4-sc pc): 4 sc in indicated st or sp, remove hook from loop, insert hook from front to back in top of first sc of group, insert hook into loop and pull through both loops.
3 single crochet popcorn (3-sc pc): 3 sc in indicated st or sp, remove hook from loop, insert hook from front to back in top of first sc of group, insert hook into loop and pull through both loops.
Double crochet 2 together cluster (dc2tog-cl): (Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st or sp, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times in same st or sp, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
Half double crochet 2 together cluster (hdc2tog-cl): (Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st or sp, yarn over, pull up a loop) 2 times in same st or sp, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on hook.
Notes
Pattern is written with a sl st join at the end of each round. I prefer to use an invisible join instead because it is tidier. Either is acceptable for this pattern up to the last round.
Pattern does not have a turning chain for each round because I usually start each new round with a standing st. If you prefer a sl st join and a turning chain, feel free to substitute.
Color A: Aubergine (purple), Color B: Boysenberry (fuchsia), Color C: Eggshell (off-white)
R1: With Color A: Ch 4, sl st to form a ring. 12 esc in the ring. Sl st to the first esc to join. Finish off. [12 esc]
R2: Join in any st with Color A: (4-sc pc, ch 2) in each st around. Sl st to the first 4-sc pc to join. Finish off. [12 4-sc pc and 12 ch2sp]
R3: Join in any ch2sp with Color B: *(1 esc, ch 1, 1 esc) in the ch2sp, sk the next 4-sc pc**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first esc to join. Finish off. [24 esc, 12 ch1sp]
R4: Join in any ch1sp with Color B: *(1 esc, ch 1, 1 esc) in the ch1sp, ch 1, sk 2 esc**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first esc to join. Finish off. [24 esc, 24 ch1sp]
R5: Join in a ch1sp bet 2 esc which have been worked into a ch1sp from R3 with Color A: *1 5-sc pc in the ch1sp, ch 4, sk the next (esc, ch1-sp, esc).** Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first 5-sc pc to join. Finish off. [12 5-sc pc, 12 ch4sp]
R6: Join in any ch4sp with Color C: *2 esc in the ch4sp, ch 1, 1 sc in the next 5-sc pc, ch 1**. Rep from * to ** around. Sl st to the first esc to join. Finish off. [24 esc, 12 sc, 24 ch1sp]
