Hi Crochet Friends! Tonight I am releasing Maggie’s Mittens a Free Pattern with video tutorial.
This pair of mittens is crocheted with bulky weight yarn and a 5 mm (H) hook. We start by crocheting the cuff, back and forth in rows, before making the rest of the mitten in one piece. The thumb is added after the main mitten is complete.

The entire set was crocheted as a Christmas Gift for my Step-Mum. Her last pair of mittens was in need of replacement after she had a small battle with a tree and the tree apparently won (darn you tree sap!).
I hope these mittens and the hat and scarf will keep her warm and cozy during our cold winter months.

Maggie’s Mittens Free Pattern
Supplies
- Yarn: Yarnspirations. Red Heart Super Saver Chunky. 141 g (5 oz) and 153 m (173 yds). 100% acrylic. Bulky Weight Yarn [5]. Machine wash in warm water, gentle cycle. Tumble dry, low. Do not bleach. Do not iron. Dry-cleanable.
- Colors: 1 skein of Light Gray. Item #E306-0241
- Hook: 5 mm (H). I purchased my hook here.
- Finished Project Yardage: 107 g (3.79 oz) and 117 m (132 yds).
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker

Finished Size
Mitten length approximately 11 inches (including the cuff which is 3 inches) X 5 inches width at widest point across the palm (when measured flat – not the circumference)
Gauge
10 rows hdc per 4 inches and 13 hdc per 4 inches
4 rows sc (worked in bl) in 1 inch
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Notes:
- This pattern begins by working the cuff. The cuff is worked in rows.
- The remainder of the mitten is worked in continuous rounds. You may use a stitch marker to mark your place.
- Do not slip stitch to join or chain additional stitches unless it is written in the instructions below.
- The hdc2tog is worked in a special way! Please refer to the video tutorial if you would like to see how I crochet my hdc2tog for this pattern. It creates a less bulky decrease stitch.
Maggie’s Crochet Mittens Pattern Instructions
Adult Mittens
The mittens are crocheted from the ribbed wrist band to the tip of the fingers in one piece. We begin by crocheting the band, which is worked back and forth in rows. The thumb of the mitten is added after the rest of the mitten is complete.
Using your 5 mm (H) hook (or size required for gauge) and leaving an 8-10 inch yarn tail:
Cuff
Row 1: Ch 11, beg in the second ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. [10]
Row 2 – Row 25: 1 sc in the back loop of each of the first 9 sts, 1 sc (working under both loops) in the last st, ch 1, turn [10]
Row 26: Fold the cuff in half. You will be slip stitching through both layers of the cuff. When folded “Row 1” is on the top and “Row 25” is on the bottom. Slip stitch through the through the BL (back loop) only of “Row 25” and the unworked loops of the “Row 1” chain. [10]
Mitten
R1: Work 25 sc sts evenly around the top edge of the cuff (the row ends); sl st in BL of 1st sc of the round, ch 1. [25]
R2: *1 hdc in each of the first 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** 5 times. [30]
R3 – R8: 1 hdc in each st around. [30]
R9: 1 hdc in each of the first 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, skip 10 sts, 1 sc and 1 hdc in the 16th st, (1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st) two times; 1 hdc in each of the last 4 sts around. [24]
*The skipped sts are the thumb section of the mitten*
R10: 1 hdc in each of the first 6 sts, 1 hdc around the stitch below the 7th stitch (we are enclosing the sc from the row below), 1 hdc in each of the remaining st around. [24]
R11 – R16: 1 hdc in each st around. [24]
R17: *Hdc2tog, 1 hdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** around. [16]
R18: 1 hdc in each st around. [16]
R19: *Hdc2tog, 1 hdc in the next st**. Rep from * to ** around to the last 4 sts. Hdc2tog, two times. [10]
Leave an 8 inch tail of yarn for seaming.
Finishing Instructions:
Weave yarn end through the loops of the final round, weave in ends and finish off. Please see this tutorial for assistance with the weaving in and closing of the top of the mitten.
Simple Closing Method for Hats and Mittens Tutorial
Thumb
With the opening for the thumb on the left-hand side of your crochet work, attach the yarn to the furthest stitch on the right-hand side of the opening.
Note: Slip stitches (sl st) do not count as stitches.
R1: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, sl st to the st where you joined your yarn. [11] (*note the ch 1 counts as 1 st).
R2: 1 hdc in the ch1sp. 1 hdc in each st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. [11]
R3-R6: 1 hdc in the first hdc. 1 hdc in each rem st around. Sl st to the first hdc to join. [11]
R7: Do not work into the first hdc (only the sl st you used to join will be in that first hdc and we do not count that sl st as a stitch). 1 sc in each rem st around. [10]
