Here’s how it works.
Here’s a brand new hat pattern for you to crochet! The Mabel Hat features the Trinity Stitch. This pattern is available in sizes Baby to Adult, for free in my post below.
My Mabel Hat uses the same stitch pattern as I used for my Grandma’s blanket a few years ago, except this hat is worked in the round.
I’ve included a detailed photo tutorial at the end of the post.
One of my favorite projects to crochet are hats. I love them because the sizing is pretty standard. Most people have very similar sized heads for their specific age group. This makes it easy to create something that can fit a wide-range of people, from all around the world.
It is also comforting to me because hats are totally based on math. That means if I know the head size I want the hat to fit and I know how many stitches per inch I crochet with a specific kind of yarn and hook, I can tell you exactly how many stitches I need to have in the hat to fit that head. I like this – because I can check my work and feel confident that what I designed is going to fit the person I designed it for.

Notes:
- Stitch multiple: 2 (Understanding Stitch Multiples)
- Initial ch 3 does not count as a stitch
- The sl st does not count as a stitch
- Make your sl st tightly
- When we begin working the pattern stitch (sc3tog) you will be TURNING your work at the end of each round.
- You may customize the Mabel Hat height by working the repeat as many, or as few, times as you wish. Every 3 rounds you add with the stitch pattern, will add approximately 1-inch of height to the hat.
- I use an invisible join to finish off my final round of stitches, you may substitute a sl st to join if you prefer.
Mabel Hat Pattern Instructions

Hi Kristen, At the end of Round 6 you need to turn your work before you begin Round 7. This will start you off with a ch1sp and you will be working into the stitches from the previous round again. Your first stitch doesn’t have a ‘last leg’ to go into, you use the ch1sp, then the next 2 sts. I hope this helps! Rhondda
I have torn this out and recounted and redone rows 6 and 7 for the adult medium size. I have studied the picture of the last sc3tog of row 7. My stitch count in row 6 is correct. The only way I can get this to work (which is exactly what I’m seeing in the picture I’ve been studying) is to put the hook in the space under the sl st joining row 6 together. With a stitch count of 64, the only way I can get that last “leg” of the last sc3tog is to do what I said above. Can you clarify if this is how it should be done?
I agree. I took a look at the post and there are too many ads showing up. I’ve let Adthrive know to adjust the ad display settings. Thank you for letting me know. If you go to the top of any of my posts there is a little printer button – click that little printer button by my share buttons and it will create a print-friendly PDF for you for the post (which removes ALL the ads on the post). You can also remove images and bits of the post that you don’t need. I hope this helps and I apologize for the experience you had. Best wishes, Rhondda
Love the hat and this may have be a great article but I don’t know because there were SO MANY ads covering the content and so many video ads playing and eating up my phone that the content was impossible to read!!!!
P.S. It has taken 10 mins to post this because of all the ads – GEEZ, this is RIDICULOUS!!! There are 6 hamburgers dancing across the screen!!!
