Here’s a brand new hat pattern for you to crochet! The Mabel Hat features the Trinity Stitch. This pattern is available in sizes Baby to Adult, for free in my post below.

My Mabel Hat uses the same stitch pattern as I used for my Grandma’s blanket a few years ago, except this hat is worked in the round.

I’ve included a detailed photo tutorial at the end of the post.

Mabel Hat Newborn Baby Pattern - Oombawka

One of my favorite projects to crochet are hats. I love them because the sizing is pretty standard. Most people have very similar sized heads for their specific age group. This makes it easy to create something that can fit a wide-range of people, from all around the world.

It is also comforting to me because hats are totally based on math. That means if I know the head size I want the hat to fit and I know how many stitches per inch I crochet with a specific kind of yarn and hook, I can tell you exactly how many stitches I need to have in the hat to fit that head. I like this – because I can check my work and feel confident that what I designed is going to fit the person I designed it for.

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: 2 (Understanding Stitch Multiples)
  • Initial ch 3 does not count as a stitch
  • The sl st does not count as a stitch
  • Make your sl st tightly
  • When we begin working the pattern stitch (sc3tog) you will be TURNING your work at the end of each round.
  • You may customize the Mabel Hat height by working the repeat as many, or as few, times as you wish. Every 3 rounds you add with the stitch pattern, will add approximately 1-inch of height to the hat.
  • I use an invisible join to finish off my final round of stitches, you may substitute a sl st to join if you prefer.
